The Fountain of Youth

Age is attitude.  You can be "old" at 30 or young at 50.  It all depends on how you approach life.

I try to stay healthy, be active and -- now -- play with clothes.  Exploring new areas of fashion is fun and invigorating.

Recently I was walking through a mall and saw the store, "Wet Seal".  I'd never gone in there before because, first, I assumed it has only women's clothes (true) and, second, I assumed it carries only gaudy stuff for young women (untrue).  Testing my assumptions, I wandered in and was pleasantly surprised.  I saw many things I liked and quite a few that I could incorporate into outfits.

I ended up buying two camis (on sale, together, for $5) and a fun pair of shorts ($10).  Today, I'm wearing one of the camis and those shorts.  Yes, they're youthful but I don't think they're too youthful.  I think I can pull them off.

Have you ever shopped at "Wet Seal"?  Are these clothes too youthful for me?

  1. You have the legs to rock these shorts, so you definitely can pull this look off. You got some pattern mixing going on too. Yah for you!

I don't shop at Wet Seal a whole lot, but Kayla really likes it. Heather

  3. I have never shopped at Wet Seal - and i like the top and cardi, i am not too sure about the shorts. Then again, I might just be jealous as i could never pull them off... my legs are not as fab as yours :)

  4. I had no idea the Fountain of Youth was in Wet Seal but apparently so! You look terrific; I like the loose cardi over the shorts. You also look radiant, which will take years off any gal's age.

  5. Not to copy what everyone else is saying but seriously you have some serious legs!
    I'm
Not brave enough or confident enough to rock a look like this but you look pretty fab! I think this could be a good pool party look for when u don't actually want to put on a swimsuit. Too bad the weather has turned so chilly! I think a big floppy hat would be a great addition to the look :)

  6. I was in love with wetseal in my mall-rat days. I bought my first star skirt (scandalously short, I wore it over jeans) and a cupcake printed top.

I think you're rocking the shorts and I adore your cardigan! Striped cardigans are the best imo.

Do you have a red sweater? For some reason I'm remembering one - but if you do I think it could rock with those shorts.

  7. Wow, those shorts look amazing on you! I could certainly see that striped cardigan as a great transitioning piece. :)

  8. You do some amazing budget shopping! I've come to learn that it's like an artform, and I have zero talent for it- but I wish I did.
I'm into the tangerine top with belt and shorts. Something about the boldness of the black and tangerine with the print of the shorts is really visually appealing.

  9. 1st, I'm ragefully envious, as in my country you can't get anything that cheap. In Northern Europe everything is frikkin expensive.

2nd, you can pull them off fine. I hate the idea
that something would be too "youthful" for someone. I'm over 30 and I shop in teens department. And I give kudos to the grannies and grandpas who give a heck about how society thinks they should dress, and they wear *the most youthful things they can find* coz they are old enuff to not care abt what others think :)

  10. Ally these shorts are made for you! Funny as you are, encouraging as you are and they show off your legs. Ally's legs what could be better? - almost nothing. Clothes is not about age, it's about the way you feel.so true. oh, and true not for clothes as well

  11. Look at them legs! You have legs that won't quit, I'm serious. And this outfit is so fun and definitely not too young for you! I admit, after turning 30 last year I considered myself "retired" from certain stores that I felt I should probably stay out of when my 16 year old cousins shop there - but then again, if you can find something nice that fits and makes you feel good, what should it matter where it comes from? Age is just a number too, you're only as old as you feel - that's what I believe. I refuse to grow up!

  12. You are gorgeous in this adorable outfit - love the b+w graphic patterns with the orange and that great belt, and your happy and confident expression most of all.

My friend Catherine at Not Dressed As Lamb had a great post recently about the whole notion of "age-appropriate" dressing, and how it makes much more sense to dress appropriately to the occasion as long as we're wearing what we like and feel good in. It's one of the best things I've ever read, and your great attitude reminded me of it:

  13. You did a wonderful job of mixing these patterns. I really love that draped cardigan. I'm going to try to wear my thrifted one in similar style this week for the first time.
Your legs/thighs are amazing! Reminds me of a cheerleader...or fitness instructor. Perfectly accentuated in these cute shorts. Allllll my life I would have loved to be able to wear shorts like these if I'd only had the figure.

  14. With black slacks or a black knee length skirt I'd wear that outfit just about anywhere. :)

  15. I love the contrasting scale of pattern between the cardi and the hot pants. And I'm super-jealous of the legs *sigh*. I am also loving mixing mustard with black-and-white… so chic. I've never shopped at Wet Seal, guess I will give it a chance!

  17. New favorite outfit. These shorts are fab, and I hate Wet Seal with a passion (sorry...I'll trying to change my opinion for you though!). I'm serious, I think I should print out a picture of your legs and use them for motivation to get me up and doing pilates again...

  18. Wet Seal was the Forever 21 in its day- there are none around my neck of the woods (I think they left the West Coast but not sure) They make cheap trendy clothes- a good option to shop when you want to try out a trend, but like F-21 the clothes don't seem to last. I remember them from the '90's.

Your choices are great- love the chevron shirt on you, and the orange top. Your legs ARE fantastic, but I do think the shorts are to tight and too short for anyone but a nubile 19 year old. But that doesn't mean you don't look good in them. However my fashion editor in my head wants to put you in a flirty above the knee A-line skirt instead.

You exploring style and fashion is good and I love seeing your evolution of style on your blog.

  20. Look at your legs--to die for! I used to shop at Wet Seal in my younger days. I agree that most stores aren't strictly young or old but you can usually find great basics just about anywhere. And I still feel very young in my 30s. :)

  21. I love the black and white wrap. So versatile - dress up or down. Where did you get that piece?
