Davy Jones

Davy Jones died today.  At age 66, of a heart-attack.

Before Justin Bieber, before the Jonas brothers, before Shaun Cassidy, there was Davy Jones.  He burst onto the scene in the late 1960's as lead singer of "The Monkees".  Davy instantly won the hearts of millions of young girls and became the heart-throb of his generation.  Magazines put him on their cover, posters were made of him, and thousands of girls wrote "Mrs. Davy Jones" on their school notebooks.

Davy had boyish good looks and an appealing innocence.  He made an ideal imaginary boyfriend.  Millions of girls grew up dreaming of Davy as their first love.

Who was your first heart-throb?

  1. I remember him on the Brady Bunch. He never really did it for me. Regardless, it's a sad loss.

  2. I used to love watching Monkees reruns on MTV sunday mornings!

My first heart throb was Jonathan Taylor Thomas.... ohhhh JTT. You sure were a hottie back in the days of "Home Improvement"!

  4. I was in love with Andy Gibb (younger brother of the Bee Gees) - I still have "Shadow Dancing" on vinyl! I had a poster of him beside my bed of him lounging on a quilt with his hairy chest exposed. I kissed him goodnight every night until his mouth wore off, ha ha!

I watched "The Monkees" in the mid-70s and always thought Davy was the cutest (then Mike), and I remember him on "The Brady Bunch" as well. I used to have a "Best of the Monkees" cassette tape back in the early 80s.

RIP, Davy - I was sad to hear of his death. That's too young.

  5. I was so sad to hear this news! I didn't know THAT much about him (having only seen a handful of episodes of the show and just off-hand stories of his excellence from my aunts) but I loved most of his music. I grew up listening to The Monkees, because my mom used to blast it while she was exercising back in the late 80s. Hehe.

My first heart-throb was Jonathon Taylor Thomas. I thought he was so dreamy when I was 11. I had his posters all over my bedroom walls and wasted many evenings watching Home Improvement. Sigh.

  6. It was either him or Richie Valens. For some reason, as a child, I picked guys from other decades! Until Donnie from NKOTB came along, I suppose. I LOVED The Monkees. We watched a couple bios about them on TV recently before he died, and I got insanely defensive when my husband said they were not a real band. They were a real band - that was just an ugly rumor that went around, but they did sing and play their own instruments. The show was ridiculous and silly and lovable. And 66 is way too young.

  7. Donny Osmond was my "ideal husband" and I was madly in love with him. I used to save up to buy their magazine and read it from cover to cover and even kept them for many years. Thankfully I am now married to my ideal husband!!!

  8. Oh so sad to hear! I saw him in concert about ten years ago, a true star. My first love was Joey from New Kids on the Block.

  9. So sad. It's always tough when a pop icon dies.

My first crush was probably Mark Hamill from Star Wars. Although, I was obsessed with Dean Cain from Lois and Clark for a while too.

  10. My very first crush was Michael Landon as Little Joe on Bonanza. Then Ringo Star, and then Davy Jones, and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders. I always had a thing for short guys!
It is scary when your contemporaries start passing away. It certainly gives you a perspective on your own mortality.

  11. I was never a 'heart throb' kind of girl. I think my first big crush was on Peter Parker. Because I knew I would understand what he was going through. (Mary-Jane was always a jerk.)

  12. Ah, Davy. I never had a huge crush on him. My first teen idol heartthrob was Shaun Cassidy. His pictures plastered my bedroom walls. But that was a long time ago...

also my heart throbs were people who most didnt even know at the time in my age group..it was like i always had to explain who my heart throb was..because i wasnt the NKOTB sort of fan...Got to the point it wasn't even worth having an idol...
