Money Pumpkins

I played a Halloween joke on Robin last night that turned out great. It's a prank designed for children but, hey, Robin was naive enough to fall for it.

The idea came to me when Robin said she'd never carved a pumpkin. That meant she didn't know what to expect when doing it. I bought a pumpkin, brought it home, and last night we carved it.

Before doing so, I secretly slit a tiny hole in the bottom with a knife, slid a dozen coins into the pumpkin, and patched up the hole.

So, I told Robin the first thing we need to do is cut the top off and scoop out the innards. As Robin was pulling pumpkin-guts out with her hand, she saw money! Coins everywhere! Nickels and dimes and pennies. She squealed in delight and looked at me for explanation. I said, "You got a Money Pumpkin! Those are the special ones."

Then Robin spent ten minutes racking her brain trying to figure out how the farmers got money into their pumpkins. She wondered if they used special seeds, if they sprinkled coins while the pumpkins were growing up... she couldn't figure it out. Finally, I couldn't conceal my glee any longer and told her the secret. She slapped her forehead and couldn't believe how silly she had been.  She admitted I really tricked her and she conceded it was a funny joke.

Do you have any favorite Halloween tricks?

  2. That's a very cute trick! I have only had proper pumpkin-carving festivities twice in my life, during the time I lived in the US... I feel like I might want to carve a pumpkin this year!

  3. I read this on Facebook and it made my face light right up (like a Jackolatern! I'm a riot, aren't I?) I hadn't heard of this prank before, nor do I know any other Halloween ones. I better keep my eye out!

  6. I also read this on Facebook. It was the first thing I saw this morning on the internet and I was all groggy with not enough sleep. But I suddenly found myself grinning like an idiot and laughing like a banshee. I could picture Robin's face and it was too adorable! Give each other a hug from me, please.

  8. I've never heard of this trick before. To cute :)
We aren't big pranksters in my family, I think we are all way to skeptical to ever really fall for something like this.

  11. That is too funny. She sounds adorable. I should totally do this trick with the kids. They would be sooo excited. My son at the moment is obsessed that the pumpkins will eventually rot and get bugs in them so he won't let them in his room and said I don't even really want them in the house!
I am planning on doing a carving party for the family Should be fun.

  15. Love this prank and I have never seen it. We always carve pumpkins with our nieces and nephews. Now I just need to decide do I play the prank on them or on my husband?

  16. :D

It's pretty amazing how the imagination will allow you to suspend your better judgement, if only for a few moments :)

    Very cute!
