World's Most Expensive Car

Do you know how much the world's most expensive car is worth? $70 Million dollars -- and that car is 60 years old.

The most desired car in automotive history is the Ferrari 250 GTO. Only 39 of them were made. They were built in the early 1960s for racing. At the time, the cars weren't considered particularly valuable but since then, they've become revered as the symbol of a magnificent time in auto racing. The 250 GTO represents Ferrari's summit.

Back then, used models were advertised for $3,000 to $9,000. Two years ago, the founder of WeatherTech paid $70 Million dollars for one and someone else paid $50 Million just before then.

You can understand how a cherished piece of history might be worth millions to someone who cares about that era. (The 250 GTO is the car at the center of a recent film, "Ford v Ferrari.") What I find fascinating beyond its value is that owners of vintage cars frequently drive -- and even race -- their vehicles. The cars aren't sculpture sitting on a pedestal; owners take them to the track for personal enjoyment and use them in vintage races. That makes sense to me. That would lead me to spend $70 Million dollars on a car.

  3. That is a beautiful car.
About 8 years ago I had the opportunity to buy a 1992 Porsche 968 for $10K. It was pristine and only had 11K miles. My son is a total car guy. For his 30th birthday I gave him the car. He has entered it in a few car shows and down quite well. He drives it 1000-2000 miles a year and gives it TLC to match his driving it hard. He likes to challenge Vettes to keep up with him on the back roads, rally style. Porsche only made the 968 for 3 years before they came out with the Boxter. The 968 has a front mounted 3 liter, 4 cylinder engine that some insiders are Porsche believe is the best 4 cylinder engine ever made by anyone. When I had the car I topped it at 125 mph. I think my son has upped this by 20-25 mph. It is a beauty and he takes good care of the car. I think it is worth much more than I paid for it but I do not think he has any plans to sell it.

  5. My brother once brought back from Italy with him a book about Ferrari. Fascinating stuff! I remember seeing images of these early racing cars. I too can understand how vintage cars could be worth millions to somebody.

  6. Wow! That is crazy expensive. I did see the movie, which was pretty eye opening. My husband actually has a VW Bus, which he restored. He still drives it and enjoys it too.

  7. We have so many classic car shows/events where I live now in WA. They line up along the roads in all the different areas or do cruises and it's loads of fun.

They occasionally sell them but not for that much! lol

  9. One senses that somewhere Jay Leno is on the call with accountants trying to figure out if he can squeeze a cool 70 mill into the annual vehicle budget for one of these vintage unicorns (that is, assuming, he doesn't already have one 😄).
