Female Life

I have a question for you.  It's a serious question.

When putting on a clingy dress, do you pull it down over your head or lift it up from the floor?

When I first encountered tight dresses, I'd step into them and pull them up.  But, doing that, I'd have trouble getting my arms into them.  So I changed approach and started pulling them down from above.  Which usually works but sometimes my boobs get in the way.

Either approach is difficult and I frequently have to wiggle and wrestle with my clothes.  I always keep a pair of scissors nearby when dressing because more than once I've gotten trapped.  There's nothing more embarrassing than being stuck halfway into a dress.

My mother didn't teach me these basic skills and I don't have a female mentor for questions like this.  Care to help out?

BTW, how do women do that magical trick in which they take off a bra without removing their shirt?!

  1. it depends on the dress for me. i think for the most part i pull them on over my head but if it has a long zipper i might step into it instead.
the bra trick is pretty magical :) i try not to do it that much because it can stretch out your bra straps but if you can unhook your bra without taking off your clothes you're most of the way there, you just have to pull off the straps one arm at a time!

    1. This happened to me at home. If it happened to me in a store, I'd die!

  3. Pull it over my head pretty much. It stretches better usually.

I'm not actually that good at the bra trick!

  4. I would pull it over my head too. And don't worry, everyone's boobs get in the way!

  5. Great Questions...
OK Bra Trick, since i do it all the time. Unhook the bra from the back you dont even have to lift the shirt you can unhook right through the clothes.
shift it down off of one shoulder, tucking your arm through on the inside, then the other..whats going to happen is you have the bra basically crossing your entire body through the sleeve, pull it out you can even do it in a dramatic effect...and you still have your shirt on!! Tip is that it works easier with short sleeved shirts...that has some give to the arms....having a long sleeve type shirt can be difficult..

As far as the clingy dress...generally speaking womens hips are sometimes much bigger then the rest of the proportions, so there are times especially if it is not a zipper up dress that the upper portion wont fit the bottom portion if you try stepping into it. For someone like me who has a 14 inch difference between hips and waist it can be impossible to step through a dress unless it is a zipper up one where i can open the zippers to begin with. Dresses for me always go over head because as you lift up your arms through it your chest actually shrinks in size since you are elongating your body...putting down your arms you will see the chest size increases...
Anyway..if you really want to try a clingy dress..I suggest just for once...try on a latex dress. Granted that you are not allergic to latex. Ally, it will be a shocking experience...having to put it on with the use of talc, then the experience of rubbing the glistening silicone on the dress to shine it up..It will be a whole new experience for you Ally..

I could be wrong but i do believe most of the women put dresses on over head because of some of the issues i have said...because the bottom half of a dress is always bigger then the top half...so rather then having to stretch it out bringing it up to get it through the hips and breast...the bigger portion is already at the top of your body working it way down.

Its funny, I guess we really take for granted how we put on clothing because it is so automatic....What i also suggest is practicing with ladies button down blouses as you will notice it is opposite from mens shirts.....

    1. I've seen latex clothes online but never in person. How unusual.

  6. most times, i pull it over my head since shoulders are (usually) narrower than the hips. if it's really a tight fit, i might try to get my arms in first, past the shoulders, then tuck my head in...if that makes sense.

    1. oh, and i'm a ninja at taking my bras off under my shirt. probably because i did (and still do) a lot of changing in the car going to and from the beach....getting in and out of my clothes and into my swimsuit...

  7. I am pretty sure I always go over the head with tight stuff and step into things with zippers, Ally. I don't have a lot of tight dresses though, just a few. Mostly my stuff either zips up the back or under the arm.

And, boobs always get in the way. Something my Dad loves (not at all) me to explain when he is coaching me on golfing. It makes for awkward family fun.

  8. Depends on the dress. Some are better shimmied over the hips and some are better wriggled into from below. And yes, boobs always get in the way..thankfully they are squishy.

The bra trick. Great for quick escapes, but bad for your bra. The trick is to undo it first, then take the straps off one by one through the armholes of your shirt (if the shirt will allow this kind of manoeuvre).

Great questions! These are the kinds of things I do instinctually, but have never really given much thought to.

    1. Thanks for the help, Lisa. Yes, these things are instinctual to most of you but learned behavior to me. And I've got to learn somewhere.

  9. It depends on the dress. Stepping into it is nicer and feels more elegant but it generally only works for dresses with a long zipper. If it is a sheath or tunic that is just stretchy enough to get on but has no fasteners or has a very short zipper I pull it on over my head. My flexibility in my upper body is really poor and I actually cannot zip some dresses on my own. Since I only live with a cat, I have no zipper helper so that dress has to go unless I can rig up a method of pulling the zipper up with string the way you do with a wet suit.

I see the bra question has been answered. I am perfectly comfortable in a bra so I never take mine off until it's bedtime.

  10. Most of the time I put it from the top and pull it down.
I am really conscious of tight things and if its really hard to get into most of the time I take it off and either dont buy it or dont wear it.

  11. Clingy dresses go over the head and you step into those that zip up. If you're having to do a whole lot of wiggling and jiggling to get into a stretch dress, it might be too small.

    1. All of my clothes are too small due to the fact that I can rarely find my size and, even when I do, only parts of the dress fit my body. I'd oddly-shaped for a woman. My shoulders, chest and arms are too big.

  12. It really does depend on the dress but usually over the head unless I have already done my hair in which case a disaster could occur.

  13. It's only the stars in movies who have these magical dresses that you can step into and pull up and they fit perfectly every time!!! All my dresses, when I wear them, are over the head.

And the bra trick is something that is 'practice makes perfect' however I don't think the bra really likes it though.

  14. It really depends on the dress for me. As others stated often you step into a dress with a zipper and everything else goes over the head. And yes, the boobs get in the way. They get in the way of loads of stuff...but you get used to it after a while. I still can't imagine what it is like to walk around with a pendulum between your legs so I guess we are even ; )

While I can take my bra off like that I don't like to. It is awkward. I'm very old fashioned in that I turn my bra around to do up the clips and then turn it back again. I'm not flexible enough to do it up behind my back. Never was.

    1. The problem with a swinging pendulum is it bangs into things...

  15. Over the head for me. I do the bra trick as soon as I walk in the door, I hate bra's. I undo the back and then remove the straps one by one.

  16. I always pull over my head, unless I'm wearing something with a zipper, then it gets pulled up from the bottom. I think it really depends on if your hips or shoulders are wider. IMO, I have really broad shoulders. I've gotten stuck in clothes before too. Only my problem is it's happened in dressing rooms while trying on.

It's one of the reasons I wear looser stuff because I fear getting stuck in it, even though I like the look of fitted stuff better on me. It's hard being broad shouldered, hippy and S-shaped.

  17. For me, it depends on the dress. Usually, if it's zippered, I step into it. If it's not, I pull it over my head. But if it's on the tighter side, I always pull it over my head, since my hips are the widest obstacle.

  18. Like other commenters, it depends on the dress. A lot of times, my thighs/hips are too big for me to step into tighter dresses. Other times, my shoulders are too wide to pull them down over my head. It all depends on the cut and construction. Wriggling and wrestling into clothes is just part of the female experience. Enjoy it :)

Oh and the bra thing? That took some necessity for me to learn. (In marching band, boys and girls sometimes change on the same school bus. Or you're faced with a four-hour busride home from a competition that ends at 10 p.m. and you just don't feel like sleeping in a bra.) Anyway, for me, I reach back and unhook the bra. If I'm wearing short sleeves, I usually can just wiggle my shoulder until the strap slides down outside the sleeve, then I pull it as far as it will go and slide my arm out, then repeat on the other side. If it's long sleeves and/or a tighter shirt, there's some fanagling to be done to pull the sleeves up far enough to grab the bra.

If you're dead serious about figuring out how to do this, I would be more than happy to make a demonstrational video and send it to you, haha. After all, the beauty of this method is that no one has to see you naked!
