Jones Beach

The most famous place on Long Island (where I live) is Jones Beach. It's a State Park with a huge beach; it draws thousands during the Summer. It also has a terrific boardwalk that's three miles long.

I prefer Jones Beach when it isn't crowded, which is Spring, Fall and Winter. Only a few diehards visit then. I went last weekend and walked the boardwalk, with my camera of course. I saw quite a few unexpected visual sights. Here are some of them. Which is your favorite?

  1. When we went to America we went to long island, it was beautiful and we also went to a brewery there. The reason i remember about Long Island is that in Melbourne we have a Deer Park, but no deer :(

    1. OMG, Dale! I can't believe you were so close to me! I've been to that brewery and drink their bottled beer all the time. Yesterday I had their Cherry Stout.

  3. Wow. Beautiful images. My favorite photos are the first and last. That shot of the seagull is awesome!

  4. That is so pretty - although we have so many seagulls here that I will never be impressed by one (they call them "sh*thawks" here, lol). I love the look of the boardwalk. You would never see that in my neck of the woods - the weather is too rough!

    1. The boardwalk requires maintenance every few years. After Hurricane Sandy, most of it had to be replaced.

  5. Lovely! You make me want to take my camera out on a walk, which I haven't done for a long time. I particularly like the curving lines of photos 3 and 4 together - nice juxtaposition of nature and man-made.

  6. I'm with you 100% on going to the beach when there are few people there. I don't even recall the last time we went to any of the ocean beaches here on the island during the middle of the day in summer.

lovely pics. The coin-op viewer has a funny face - looks crosseyed :)

  7. How lovely. I prefer seaside places in winter months.

  8. The deep, punchy blue sky - set off all the more by the contrast of the white and grey seagull - of the last image makes it my favourite here, but each is engaging and very lovely, Ally. Thank you for sharing this beautiful corner of your town with us.

  12. Beautiful photos as always! I used to never be a fan of the beach, then I realized that it was the crowds that did it. I would totally love to go during the off season, it seems like there is more to appreciate.

  13. Wow, this is where you live!? Lucky you! It looks so wonderful! I used to live close to the seaside when I was living with my parents and I sometimes miss it. But I also love the city where I live now :)
I hope you are having a wonderful week so far :)

  16. I love that sign! I initially thought the funnel was a bent over person. Beautiful lines. I do love a beach in the off season...or the on season! xo Jazzy Jack

    2. Nice to meet you too, Ally! Just discovered your blog and loving every minute reading all your old postings.

I grew up in Bellmore and now live in West Babylon so I am a lifelong Island gal. I felt like I practically spent my entire summers during high school at Field 4 at Jones Beach. Have so many fond memories of the beautiful beach and going to concerts at the JB Theater. Where are you on LI?

    3. I grew up in Huntington and live there now. I'm obviously familiar with both Bellmore and West Babylon. Happy to hear from you.

  18. They are all great, but Ilove the viewfinder pic. I am not sure if that is what it's called, but I always loved looking through them as a kid! Do you still have to pay a quarter to look through them?

    1. Yes. And you always hear kids pestering their parents for the coin.

  21. I love going to the beach off season! Mister Man and I would love to go to Wildwood and Cape May this October (provided I'm back to being employed). That looks like a good beach to check out.

  22. These photos look so quiet and peaceful, really nice. I bet it's quite different when it's crowded!

  23. I've only been to one beach in my whole life and that was in Florida. It's quite a drive to get to any, but I'd love to go to one soon.
