Birthday Gift

I've received several nice birthday gifts and I'm grateful for all of them. Thanks!

I always own at least two wristwatches -- one for work and one for off-duty fun.  As attractive as my work-watch is, I like having a second one that reminds me I'm not at work.  During my recent trip to Minnesota, that watch died.  It was bright yellow and made by Nixon.  I was sad to see it go, but it gave me many years of faithful (and colorful) service.

So... turning a negative into a positive, I decided to shop for a new off-duty watch.  Which was actually a very enjoyable process.  I considered many alternatives and liked looking at what's available.  I finally settled on something new and interesting.  A Movado watch made out of carbon fiber.

I've loved Movado watches for years.  I bought one three decades ago which I still have.  It is their classic Museum Watch which has a blank black dial adorned only with a small round dot.  The design of that dial has won many awards and is in museums.  The Movado company has been making watches for over a century.

For my birthday this year, I got an updated version of the watch.  It is made with carbon fiber which is super-light and super-strong.  A high-tech material often used in fast motorcycles, racing cars and airplanes for its superior abilities.  Many bikers put carbon fiber equipment on their motorcycles the way older bikers used to use chrome.  The material has cachet among the racing set.

Here's a picture of my new watch.  The watch actually looks better in person than it does in photos; because of the way light reflects off the dial, it has more contrast in person.

Do you wear watches?  What kind?

  2. Very chic! I used to wear a watch... sort of fell out of the habit, along with the rest of my jewelry-on-a-daily-basis.

  3. What a gorgeous watch. I've actually been wanting a watch off and on for years. (OCD means constant time checking). I've never been able to find the right combination of style, tick-less, and fit to my tiny wrists.

I definitely love the Movado style. Even love the name! I'm oogling now. ;P

  4. Gorgeous watch! I got back into the habit of wearing a watch a few years ago when my mom got me a Seiko for my birthday. I had to train myself to look at it and use it at first, but now I miss wearing it if I forget it at home! It's two tone, which means it matches just about any bracelet I throw on to pep up my work outfit.
Hmm, I love the idea of a "fun" watch for off-duty hours ... I might have to follow your lead and get one.

  5. Love the style you chose and Happy Birthday! :)
I love watches but pretty much wear them only as a fashion accessory.
I am lusting over a dark green Michael Kors one.

  6. Happy Birthday! I love your watch. I just got a Lorus recently (for our trip), but I do enjoy wearing a watch again after many years.

  7. Happy Birthday!
I always wear watches, too, I just like being quickly able to see what the time is without looking for my phone...
I have an old one from my dad that I cherish a lot.

  8. I wear a watch, it's a dainty little Rotary watch which long ago needed a new strap so I took the plunge and got a bracelet strap for it ... in rolled gold, fancy!

  9. Great choice!

I am a big watch person. In fact, apart from my wedding band it is the only piece of jewellery I wear every single day. I don't take my swatch off even for the shower.

My husband is a HUGE watch lover. He has lots of them, and would have many more if our bank account allowed.

  10. My brother's actually a huge watch enthusiast. Huuuuuuuge. :D If you ever want to discuss watches, or have someone research watch possibilities for terms that you set and price range, he is your man!

  11. Oooh, it's fun! I love the detail on the face. And I love that it has sort of a tie in to biking! I wear watches, but mainly for fashion...I rarely check the time on them. Pathetic? Maybe.

  12. I love it! It is so sleek, but kind of spacey. I could see The Doctor wearing this! I have an Eeyore watch that Kyle bought for me about 11 years ago. It needs a battery, and it needs the straps replaced. I should get around to doing that. I like wrist clocks.

  16. I have a bit of an obsession with watches. I always gravitate to vintage styles because of their classic look and that's perhaps why I just love the Movado watch. I'm very jealous I've had my eye on that one for years and years! (Happy Birthday!)

  18. What a strikingly smart, chic, handsome watch. I love that its palette is so classic and endlessly versatile. My pesky nickel allergy keeps me from usually wearing watches (it's really hard to find ones that are completely devoid of this commonplace metal, especially in North America - nickel labeling and inclusion laws are more stringent in Europe), but if I could sport them with abandon, I don't doubt for a moment that I would. It's another type of accessory after all! :)

  19. There you are! Finally re-found your blog, and am happy to pop in on time to wish you a Belated Happy B-Day! You are still such a spring chicken ... hope you celebrate the whole month!
Lovely, LOVELY watch! So chic. Very minimal and on point. I collect automatic watches ... the kind with skeleton works and they don't need a battery. Mostly boy-sytle, and by Invicta, Rotary and Sterling. I also have a recently acquired penchant for "tank" styles, smaller and more ladylike, a la Cartier ( no hope EVER of a real one, but there are some wonderful inspired ones, most of mine by Pulsar.) Most recent purchase. a Rotary auto-skeleton in bright silver and rose gold bracelet style. Great value and I'm wearing it with great pleasure!

  20. Happy belated birthday! I love the carbon fiber look of your new watch. I have a few that I just can't get rid of because I like they way they look even though I don't ever wear them. It's too hard to type!

  21. Love your new watch! Happy belated birthday to you, Ally. hug~hug
My husband has a little watch collection going. They're all the same brand (?) but slightly different in band/face color, etc. I imagine he has at least one for every day of the week. I have a 3...in brown, black, and silver. My gold one broke. Need to replace it.

I have only one watch and I love it. You can see it in my new post... its a small gold one that my husband gave to me a few years ago for my birthday. Its a really old one that he found somewhere in an antique shop.
Yours looks really cool by the way!

  23. Happy belated birthday!! I hope you had a good one. Sounds like you got spoilt - that watch you got is gorgeous! I used to wear them all the time but not anymore, I think i used to forget to put it on every morning so I just stopped lol. I really should wear one though, as my day revolves around a schedule now xx

  24. I LOVE your new watch! Hope it brings you many years of happy clock watching.

Hope your birthday was super special ... I celebrated with you while down at the coast (Durban) for our annual Summer holiday. I got your birthday gift while down there ... which I will send with my nephews in December ... Our postal service has been on strike for 11 weeks now and I would hate to put a gift in the post and know that it will more than likely NEVER arrive.

  25. This is a nice treat to give yourself!
I have a few watches now that I think of it - a Gucci I never wear, a Givenchy that has no batteries, a couple of Bijoux Terner ones that cost 10 bucks and the ones I wear the most are Victorinox Swiss Army.
