Bringing Back The Eighties

The Eighties were a time of extreme fashion -- colorful, wild clothes that played with past conventions.  Yes, sometimes they went too far (big hair! blue eyeshadow!) but you know my taste in fashion runs that way.  Nothing is too extreme for me.

In honor of the decade, I'm commencing a mission to single-handedly bring back one of the trademark items from that period -- leg-warmers!  They were HUGE back then.  Every girl had several pairs and you could mix them with anything.

Here's my opening salvo.  If people wouldn't make fun of you, would you include these in your arsenal??

No look back at the Eighties would be complete without visiting the big hair that was popular then.  Here are examples of what I'm talkin' about...

  1. Legwarmers have been making a comeback lately - I've seen a lot of my students wearing them. I'm not a terribly big fan myself - to me they always feel like dancewear or exercise wear. Although I have to admit, I was jealous of Natalie Portman getting to wear them in Black Swan. Maybe I should take up dance again :)

  2. This is so cute. The purple stripes socks are too much (in a good way).

  4. I love legwarmers and I always wanted to have some as a kid because all the cool girls in my ballet class were wearing them (this was the 90s, so they had already been relegated into the realm of sportswear). In fact I'm wearing legwarmers as I type this. Mine are a "safe" solid black, but striped ones are also cool. I would pick up the purple somewhere else in the outfit (as I'm wont to do with bright colors).

  5. I can remember working out with my mom to Jane Fonda and wearing legwarmers! I loved then and wanted to wear them all of the time! So fun!

  6. Oh Aly no ... no no no ... can't, couldn't, wouldn't, won't ... lol ... remember them well from my youth and if I dig long enough could possibly find a picture with a pair on. But really could not bring myself to wearing them again ... you look super cute in yours.
It took my eldest sister about 15 years to get rid of her 80's hair style!

  7. I literally almost bought a pair from Target the other week, to work out in. I love leg warmers & also knee-high socks but I have chubby legs and they pinch in the fat bits. :( Maybe when I become an ace runner again? Something to motivate me!

I love the pink top and I am really loving the new hair, its very you!

  8. How fun! I wear knee socks, but my favorite baggy legwarmers never stay up. Curse of the tiny legged. I also love tucking leg warmers into boots so they peek out over the top.

  10. Hahaha I remember that hair! I was a little girl during the 80s and always accompanied my mom to the hair salon. :P

Your outfit is so fabulous! That bright pink shirt looks fantastic on you! And you pull off leg warmers a LOT better than I do! You're lucky.

  11. I quite like legwarmers and wore them all through my 20s. I looked ridiculous, but you actually manage to make them look!

By the way, that picture is of an LA band called Vixen. They are virtually unknown, so funny that you posted it. Check out their vid, now THAT'S big hair!!!!

  13. Oh, legwarmers are TOTALLY making a comeback. I don't own any (yet) but the minute I see them on the Target sale rack I'll snatch up a couple pair. I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of the fad but I'll try anything once. (I wasn't really around for the fad in the 80's)

  17. I wear leggings all the time. But it's mostly when I'm training. Aerialists dress like dancers to work out. I have a pair that cover my whole leg. haha. They're FABulous.

I think I would feel really comfortable wearing them in a real life outfit as well. hmmm...maybe I will someday.

  19. I see Asian girls working slouchy legwarmers all the time and I think it looks okay, but since where I live is so warm anyways, it's such an impractical items for me to have.

    Following you back!

I like your new hair !
And i think you did a great job recreating the 80's, maybe you could have shown a little shoulder a - la - Cindy Lauper.

  21. Someday I'll have to find a picture of me with big 80's hair. It happened, my friend. I'm not above anything, I'll rock anything that makes me smile. Python over-the-knee boots with a very short vintage-inspired dress at work? Hell yeah!
