The New Yorker

I read voraciously and magazines are my favorite meal.  Of the dozens I look at, my favorite magazine is The New Yorker.  I love the high quality of its prose and the wide range of its subjects.  I have a subscription and read every issue cover-to-cover.

The new issue (3/28) has three articles on fashion.  One on Christian Louboutin, another on the inventor of Spanx (Sara Blakely), and a third on Helena Rubinstein.  It also has interesting articles on the Japan disaster and the Barry Bonds trial.

My favorite line is in the Christian Louboutin article.  The article describes how delightful the shoes Louboutin designs are; it also says how expensive they are ($400-$6,000).  One woman, when her husband reviewed her credit-card bill and asked about a large charge, told him that Louboutin was her gynecologist.  Amazingly, he believed her!

What are your favorite magazines?

  2. I giggled at the tree comic. Hmm I'd say "What's Cooking" from Kraft is on of my favorites for all the recipes. I don't read too many magazines. Reader's Digest is pretty good. I enjoy a good cosmo every now then too.

  3. I'm with Emma here -- Mark knows about Louboutin, now I'm doubting the wisdom of ever telling him... haha.

  6. I love a good magazine and the New Yorker is a favourite. My favourite serious magazine is The Economist, and my favourite snacking magazines are Real Simple,UK Vogue and Australian magazine called Frankie. New Yorker cartoons are genius...so is invoking the medical clause when explaining a huge credit bill!

  7. I've never read a "New Yorker" copy but it looks great! I don't really read magazines but when I do they are about interior design and architecture or gardening and DIY projects. I absolutely hate fashion magazines though. (ok, I've read cosmo twice for the fun of it....).
I'm more into books. Nice, funny post!!

  8. I get most of my news from the internet, so I don't actually have a favorite newspaper or magazine. Most fashion-focussed non-blog publications disappoint me anyway...

I have to say that I don't understand people's obsession with super-expensive shoes, especially given that these shoes are often utterly impractical - though Louboutin's red soles are an awesome design idea.

Also, my feminist soul cringes at how matter-of-course it still seems to be that a husband gets to survey his wife's credit card bill... The implicit assumption probably is that he's earning a larger part or even all the family income, so he's paying for her credit card bill, and therefore he gets to control her spending... Grah. Can't help noticing this, since it was Equal Pay Day in Germany yesterday :)

  9. The New Yorker is such an amazing magazine! I have heard so many beautiful things about it and I wish it was sold here in London. It would be amazing to be able to write a story for a magazine like this one someday.

  10. I adore these cartoons... too cute. Personally I'm not a big magazine reader. I have a subscription to Psychology Today and Flare, also tons of old National Geographic and random fashion magazines laying around.I never really read them though. There may be a handful of articles that interest me, which I read... but it's the pictures I'm after. I just flip and stare at them. Since I just like the pretty pictures, I tend to go online and look at fashion sites because there is usually more pictures and it's free!

I think it's amazing that you can read a magazine from cover to cover. You must have a very good attention level :)

  11. hmmm I must admit, I am mostly reading peer reviewed journals (geek!!) but the one indulgence I do have for magazines is IN STYLE because there are lots of good outfit ideas. When I travel I treat myself to one of those magazines and I read it on the flight and dream up new outfits.. but otherwise take out gardening mags from the library... (like to keep it sustainable and not buy this kind of stuff).

have a super weekend Ralpherooo... be safe on your bike!! xoxo J
