Symphony Orchestra

As a music-lover I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never heard a symphony orchestra play. That's about to change.

I recently discovered a fun, comic TV show about classical musicians ("Mozart In The Jungle;" Amazon Prime). It ran for four seasons (2014-2018) and has great actors in it, like Bernadette Peters, Gael García Bernal, Malcolm McDowell and Wallace Shawn. The characters and their antics are amusing: musicians are as eccentric as any other artists.

After diving into the classical music pool, I thought it fitting to hear the real New York Philharmonic. For a Valentine's Day gift I bought tickets to attend Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. Don't tell Robin!

Have you ever heard a symphony orchestra play?

  1. I have! The most amazing performance I ever saw was a multi-choir (three, including a children's choir!) performance of Orff's "Carmina Burana". It was nearly three hours of stunning music, with soloists and movements - just incredible.

Robin is going to love that. Enjoy! And wear something swanky! I know you have Fluevogs. ;-P

  4. How lovely! And yes, early on in our courtship the husband took me to the symphony. We were the only people who were dressed up, LOL.

    1. That's great. It's sad people didn't dress up. I'm planning to use the occasion to look good.

  5. SHAME ON YOU for not having been before when you are in NEW YORK!!!!!!!! Haha, you are forgiven since you are going NOW! Actually, you make me feel a little sad because I was supposed to PERFORM Tschaikovsky's 5th symphony myself, playing flute NEXT Saturday but it was cancelled because of the worry of Omicron Covid cases rising! Ah well, I have played it before!
I hope you enjoy it. Might be good to listen to it in advance so you have some familiarity of it OR just go and enjoy it as a surprise! I'm intrigued by the piece called Saudade in the same programme- a US premiere of that! There's also Strauss which I am sure will be exciting too!
And yes, it's lovely to dress up for a concert- I always like to dress nicely!
The NYPHil have a really nice Kids education programme or at least they used to- their website was brilliant!
And yes, I have heard a symphony orchestra perform! Many times! ;-)

    1. Thanks for the encouragement, pal. Yes, I know you're steeped in classical music but I never was introduced to it. I'm trying to open that door now.

  6. What a joyful, rewarding experience this is going to be for you, Ally.

I have never seen a symphony in person myself, but can just imagine what a powerfully awesome and inspiring thing it must be. Please feel free to share the details of your first time (at the symphony ;D) with us after the fact.

  7. It's been years and years but it is incredible. I miss live music, but regrettably it's going to be some time before my area is less ravaged by the plague. For now, I'll keep enjoying the guy who plays a sousaphone in a loval bridge tunnel I pass through a lot! They call him Tuba Guy and I always groan because SOUSAPHONE!
