Record Store Day is this Saturday!
For the past decade, independent record stores have been celebrating the survival of vinyl records. It's a movement I support: just 'cause technology grows old doesn't mean it should be abandoned. Fight back against disposable modern culture.
Also, there's charm in vinyl records: aural from their warm sound, visceral from handling them. Vinyl involves you in the process of playing recorded music; you're not merely pressing a button. They're the musical equivalent of riding a motorcycle.
Visit one of the 1,400 record stores on Saturday. There are parties, special releases and promotions.
Thanks for the awareness! Records were such a huge part of my childhood, from playing 45s of King Harvest, the Everly Brothers and Rick Springfield, to getting a stereo and playing John Lennon, REO Speedwagon and Hall & Oates. #longlivevinyl
ReplyDeleteGood to know! Many of my friends are recently gotten out their old vinyl and purchased new collections.
ReplyDeleteNothing else sounds like vinyl - it's a real physical sound, vs. a digitally reproduced one. The first time L and I played a record, our cats freaked out, running around, looking for the people!
ReplyDeleteI know L will be at the record store this weekend (maybe not buying vinyl, though).
I don't remember if I told you, but both he and our friend Spence have both gone gaga over 10CC, from your post of a few weeks ago. :) They were thrilled to "discover" them - and L's also been getting into Godley & Creme.
I'm so happy. I too have been buying up old 10cc albums I'd never heard before. They're a band worth listening to.
DeleteWe still have one milk crate of vinyl LPs and we have a record player but they are both in storage. perhaps they will see the light of day again. One son took a big chunk of our collection
ReplyDeletePlease take them out! You'll enjoy playing records again more than you expect. It'll trigger old memories and encourage you to buy some new LP's, which aren't expensive. Most used albums I buy now are $3.
DeleteWe both still have most of our vinyl and have bought lots more in the last couple of years. And we have several vintage record players, our favourite being part of a 1960s radiogram. xxx
ReplyDeleteCool!
DeleteI still have my old Technics turntable. lol
