Salt and Pepper

The best vintage store on Long Island (Rosie's Vintage Store) got in a bunch of quirky salt-and-pepper shakers so I went down and checked them out. I came home with these two beauties.

One depicts an old TV from the Fifties; the other celebrates the 1964 World's Fair. The latter has meaning for me since I not only attended but actually performed music at the World's Fair. My music school gave a concert in the main pavilion and, at 7 years old, I played Beatles songs on my accordion. I know -- cool music, uncool instrument.

Do you collect anything like salt-and-pepper shakers?

  3. Do you still play? I've always wondered as a pianist what it would be like.
Those s and p shakers are sooo collectible. You almost inspire me to start.
I collect little hand blown glass objects. And a certain type of pottery which is greeny glazed. But I only have a few pieces.

  4. I used to collect salt & pepper shakers until I had to move several times and packing all my various collections got to be too much :-)

  6. From one former accordion player to another the World's Fair Grounds will always be special. As a kid the things we saw there would amaze and inspire us and the memories would last forever. It is always nice to drive by the Unisphere on the Van Wyck or Grand Central. It always inspires memories.

  10. I love these vintage salt and pepper shakers. Yes, I used to collect these when I had a big house with lots of lovely shelves. I also used to collect China and had beautiful stemware and dishes when I served at large family gatherings . There something very whimsical and fresh about this and I love the ones you chose. How cool is the pair that looks like an old fashion television set!

  11. When I was a kid (maybe 8-11) the mother of my friend was a S&P shaker collector. She just kept them all in boxes no rhyme or reason on how they were stored. Sometimes on rainy days in their basement me, my friend & our bothers would spend the day setting them all out on tables, pair them up. This took hours to do. I can’t remember why we did this because at the end of the day we would just put them all back in the boxes in the same no rhyme or reason fashion. Another rainy day came and we’d do it all over again. Oh to be a carefree kid again, but know what I know now.

  12. Although I do understand the significance of the 1964 World Fair shaker (trying to imagine a 7-year old you playing the accordion now!), my favourite by far is the TV set. S&P shakers are about the only thing I don't collect, but I would certainly have picked up that one! xxx

  13. Oooh they are so cute! I love that you collect them! I always fancied a Dalek cruet set as they resembled Pepper pots anyway!
My first proper speaking part in a Musical was Meet Me in St Louis when I was 12 so hearing talk of the World Fair reminds me of the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition from that!
