Shopping Bags

We usually pay attention to what's in our shopping bags, not the bags themselves.  I stopped to wonder about this today.  I like examining seldom-contemplated things in life.

What prompted my mental excursion was a visit to the boutique I told you guys about last week.  It's a place for tweens to buy fashionable clothing.  The salesgirls who work there are very nice and I choose to drop on Saturdays during my walk around the neighborhood.

For a small purchase, I got the beautiful shopping bag pictured above.  Rarely do you think of shopping bags as cute but this one has an amazing animal-print.  I'll re-use the bag again and again.

Upscale retailers know that offering attractive bags is part of the "experience" they offer shoppers.  Many establishments distinguish themselves with instantly-recognizable packaging.  Tiffany, for example, uses a unique color for its bags.

Do you notice shopping bags?  Do they matter at all to where you choose to shop?

  1. I would say that it doesn't make a difference to where I shop, but I certainly notice shopping bags, so perhaps it does! Anyway, Austin has a plastic bag ban, retailers can no longer use/hand them out, so some of them have come up with beautiful new paper bags. (Being the hippy kind of place Austin is, most people use and have used their own reusable sacks.)

  2. A few Canadian stores are giving away reusable bags identical in size to the paper type ones. Almost everyone on my bus re-uses them as lunch bags. It's great -- less waste than the standard plastic bag, the style of higher end bags, and free advertising for the store. I've been known to tailor my shopping habits on clothing if I know I need a new lunch bag!

  3. That is a great bag! Although, I've got to admit, I've never understood the fascination with Tiffany bags. I mean, I do like that little Tiffany heart necklace everyone has knock-offs of but I've never liked the packaging.

I love love love the graphics on the Buffalo Exchange reusable shopping bags, and since the company is bag-free now I wanted to buy one and use it. Effer snapped the first hour I had it. :-(

  4. I love the shopping bags in Japan. Everything you purchase gets wrapped beautifully and handed to you in a gorgeous, well-made paper bag. I save them when I get home and use them when I bring things to parties and such.

  5. It does not make a difference to me - but I will say I do like the cool sturdy bags with handles that some stores give out, so when I get those, I hold on to them for a long time.

Lately I've just been bringing my own tote bag to the thrift shops!

  6. Not bags, but I've saved every All Saints shipping box I've gotten. They are faux distressed, and the earlier ones had the coolest script on the inside. I use them for storage.

Otherwise I don't shop places that give out pretty bags. My goodwill ones look like Chinese food take out with the THANK YOU. ;)

I also have a tendency to turn down bags or carry my own reusable.

  7. I love a good shopping bag! It won't affect if I shop somewhere, but I do feel all pleased when the bags are very nice. Then I squirrel them away to use again.

Bags with rope handles are my particular addiction...

  9. I don't really notice the way a shopping bag looks but I do get pretty excited when it's the kind you can reuse over and over

  11. I love interesting shopping bags, although it doesn't seem to affect whether or not I shop there. But, I always look at the graphics and styles, since I used to do product design and fashion in uni. Hope you have a great week! /Madison

  12. I had a nice little collection of those little Tiffany bags from my pre-underemployment days. And, yes, they ARE adorable.

Looking forward to that ice bar! Thank you!

  14. This post makes me think of this decor idea: http://pinterest.com/pin/108790147221413749/ or http://pinterest.com/pin/13862711323331650/ or http://pinterest.com/pin/157274211960242777/

I'm thinking about doing that for my closet, but I'd have to just go to the stores and ask for a bag...I can't afford to buy something from each store, haha. Wonder if they'd oblige?

  15. shopping bags are always a nice add. I fell odd carrying around plastic bag if I get to shop offline.
I reused bags often before storing my training clothes there, it was very comfortable and needed less of space

  18. That is a seriously cool shopping bag! I think it's the kind of bag a vintage bombshell like Jayne Mansfield would have been gaga about.

I definitely notice shopping bags, product packaging, the attention to detail that (online) sellers use when packing and sending out orders, too. There have been a number of chains here in Canada that have folded (or been bought out) throughout my lifetime (such as Eatons and Woodwards), and I sometimes I stop and think how nice it would be if I had at least one shopping bag in good condition from each. If I catch wind of any others going the way of the dinosaur, I'm definitely going to try and get a bag from them before they do.

  19. As I hardly ever frequent the high street anymore, I usually bring my own bags when I go shopping. You do sometimes get a funny look when you buy something from say H&M and say to the sales-assistant "don't worry about a bag, I've brought my own"...I think these companies rather you walk around with one of their bags as it gives them free advertising...xXx

  20. I do notice shopping bags and prefer those made out of paper as they have more structure.
In fact I keep my "fancy" bags and whenever returning an item or giving something away i use these.

  21. Oooh, I love getting a Tiffany's bag! OK, honestly I love walking around with a Tiffany's bag and making people jealous--so bad! :)

  22. I think I've become more aware of shopping bags (not because I shop anywhere that gives you fancy ones) because of the whole reusable shopping bag thing. Now you can have your own collection of cute and stylish bags to bring along and fill with groceries, clothing, fabric, or whatever! (I mean you could always do so before, but now people don't look at you weird anymore).

Also, this makes me think of the previous century when you'd get hat boxes. And how they're now super expensive decorative storage container purchases (see the $30 ones in craft stores like Michael's or Jo-Ann fabrics), when before they were a necessity to protect your headware.

  23. I must say that I really like nice looking shopping bags however the nicer they are the more expensive the store (usually!!!). My favourite scrapbooking store has a see-through plastic bag with a pretty pink pattern on it ~ love that! Althought I don't much like the plastic bags we get at our food stores I do re-use them (we recycle as much as possible) until they can only be used in the dustbin.
