Bad Ideas

I deplore the lack of imagination and courage in Hollywood.  Too often, studio executives green-light dumb ideas for big-budget movies merely because, years ago, those same ideas made money.  Sequels don't need to be bad, but they often are because their motivation (commerce) deviates from the true aim of the cinema -- which is art.

Take a peek at this poster and tell me if you agree...

  2. This is nothing in comparison to the bad decisions they make while producing Hindi Movies (and sequels). But I agree with you 100% :)

  3. I think sequels made to cash in on the franchise is often crap, but for movies that already have more story written (LotR, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Nu!Star Trek)... sequels are necessary.

However there are some movies I'd love a bad sequel to: Fifth Element, Wanted, Doom.

  4. Haha! I'm pretty sure that poster is just a joke.

I get tired of remakes where that take an old movie and redo it with new, young actors (Footloose, the Karate Kid).

But I actually like sequels. It's nice to revisit well-loved characters. Some really great movies are sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, The Godfather Part II, Terminator 2 Judgement Day, The Dark Knight.

    1. Of course it's a joke, buddy. Judy Garland is not around any more.

I'm not against sequels per se, only when they exploit an original without being good. And remaking old movies -- and even old TV shows (like "The Flintstones", "The Muensters", "McCale's Navy") shows a poverty of imagination.

  8. Is this an actual movie or a joke?! It would probably be fun but extremely trashy (also, she seems to fit the mould of a "fighting f*cktoy", which I gather is a cinema trope). I don't think movies need to be art, there's room for purely entertaining ones too, so this isn't necessarily bad. Also, in a twisted way, action heroines are empowering. Also, Tim Burton's grown-up Alice in Wonderland was pretty good!

    1. The poster is satire, meaning it's a joke based on sharp social commentary. The presentation of a female hero as both sexy and lethal is currently in vogue, as you note. The bizarre idea of transforming the most traditional female character (Dorothy) into that role is humorous. To me, anyway.

I thought the joke nicely illustrated my otherwise serious and sound point about the decline in imagination in Hollywood films.

  9. I can't help but think of Resident Evil when I see this poster... and personally, I would see every and any remakes/sequels to the Resident Evil chain. Because Milla Jovovinch, kicking zombie ass makes me unbelievably happy. lol.

However. I do agree that there are too many remakes & sequels out there.... it doesn't feel like the majority of movies out there are original.

  11. Sometimes sequels destroy the glory of the original movie.
