Fashion Of The Times

Some people are embarrassed by the clothes they wore when they were young, but I find great enjoyment in viewing earlier fashions.  Even wild, short-lived trends are fun to look at.

I just wrote a long article on 1970's fashion which I'm going to put up soon as a guest-post.  It focused my eye on earlier trends so when I saw Natalie, whose blog I follow, reveal her outfit from 20 years ago, I jumped all over it!  Here's her outfit.  (Natalie is on the right.)

I absolutely love the puffy sleeves.  Some might cring at 80's fashion but its novel touches amuse me greatly.  What do you think?

  1. Oh dear God - the 80's!! I vaguely remember my mother dressing me up in pistachio coloured and paisley patterned pants, pistachio green sweater and a matching black jacket (this time the pistachio/paisley detail was spotted in the lining)with huge puffy sleeves!! Green themed nightmare!!

  2. What an adorable picture! I was nee in the '88 so I must admit I don't recall a whole lot about this era! What I do know is that I love the puffy sleeves, big glasses and pouffy hair being rocked in this picture!

  3. I like the picture, but I think those sleeves are bigger than my entire body. They scare me a little bit.

  4. I don't know enough to know if this is obviously 80s. I'll have to take your word on that. But I think she and the dress are adorable.

  5. I love the 80s - that picture looks about 1988 to me (that was at the height of puffy sleeves). I graduated high school in 1985, so I was thoroughly saturated in all the colours and styles. It's funny how we always seem to gravitate back to that, isn't it? I still love the colours, the hair and the shoes!

  6. Great picture! I love seeing old trends too. I recently found a picture of my mother at her prom wearing a white jumpsuit! It was fabulous.

And thanks for the tripod/camera advice... I'm definitely going to look into this :)

  11. omg, hilarious. love it! actually, one thing the 80s had going for it was that color was big and bold and beautiful. collections now are SO color-phobic. boring. and i love asymmetry!

  12. I think there is something sweet about 80's style. I like REAL 80's style better than the throwback looks that are in fashion now. Those girls look happy and I love that the looks are slightly cheesy, but cute.

  13. I've been thinking to myself a lot lately how, having been a child in the 80s, I hated 80s fashion (even as a little kid). I hated knee socks, saddle shoes, all of it. Until 5th grade when lace-trimmed leggings and diaper pants came out, and then I was all over those! I can't see myself EVER donning a pair of diaper pants again. But I have grown to love 80s fashion now! I don't wear side ponytails much these days, but I do love legwarmers and all kinds of other 80s stuff. My 80s-themed 30th b'day party was some of the most fun ever. And you don't have to look far to see lace-trimmed leggings, knee socks, etc. popping up EVERYwhere in stores. :)

What an awesome picture. As long as these dresses were never worn by bridesmaids, they are okay with me. heehee

  16. Oh my! Those dresses are just like one huge cupcake! The older I get, the more I appreciate being born in the 80s. The best decade ever! ha ha. Great post!

  17. It's always risky to reject previous fashions as they will always come around again. And just because they are "old" doesn't make them bad. We'll be wearing it all again and loving it. Leggings are a case in point.

  18. I love old fashions- even the the cringe-worthy ones! Plus, I would wear puffy sleeves any day if I got to go to the prom with Harry Potter...

  20. I love the '80s and I think the fashion was great! Of course people don't really wear clothes like that anymore but I love watching old photos of my parents from that time. The '80s was the best decade for sure!

  21. I <3 80s!!! Even my nails this week have been inspired by the 80s (bright pink with black leopard spots). Also, the puff sleeves are adorable... I have a few in my closet but not to the same volume as the good ol'80s.
