Film Cameras

I'm reading about fancy, expensive cameras. A Hasselblad medium format will set you back over $10,000. A decent Nikon is about half that amount. Those prices are a lot of money.

Fortunately, there's an alternative -- cheap cameras. A Holga is only $20 and most vintage film cameras can be picked up for less. Of the five working cameras I have, my favorite cost me five bucks. It's a 1963 Brownie Starmite II. The camera was manufactured in July 1963 and cost $12 new.

Last Fall I used the Brownie to snap this picture of an old truck at a farm on the East end of Long Island. Photography doesn't have to be expensive.

    1. Yes, that light appeals to me. And yes, I've already framed a dozen of my photos, for hanging in my new future space. Got nice wooden black frames.

  4. "Manual" cameras have such a fantastic quality, even super expensive digital cameras don't replicate.

Even a disposable camera can be a ton of fun.

  5. There is such a lovely sense of "that just feels right" to taking a photo of a classic car with a camera that would have been on the market when said set of wheels was originally on the road.

  7. Great shot! I think old American cars are so photogenic and you captured this one beautifully.

I agree that photography needn't cost a fortune. There are so many ways to get creative with what you have or as you say with something cheap. I think the fun is playing with the camera to get a piture which makes you happy :)
