Cooking

The pandemic has been awful but one unexpected benefit of staying at home is improvement in our cooking. Since the key to honing any skill is practice, cooking more frequently helps.

Another way to improve your dishes is to learn from talented chefs. They not only teach us, they inspire us to try new techniques, new ingredients, new spices. Two chefs I discovered recently are American chef Samin Nosrat whose bestselling book "Salt Fat Acid Heat" was made into a Netflix series and British chef Nadiya Hussain who also has a fun Netflix series ("Nadiya Bakes").

When the pandemic ends and I invite you over for a meal, come -- your mouth won't regret it.  :-)

  2. Oh my gosh, that looks amazing, Ally! You're making me hungry.

My own cooking has not improved. I'm still a reluctant cook at best.

Thank you so much for the sweet Valentine's card! I have it on my desk at work where I can look at it. <3

    1. Ah, reluctance is the problem here. I know that well since there are other areas of life where my reluctance impedes growth.

  3. I'd love a bowl of that with a piece of crusty bread. Mmm!

I'm going back and forth with cooking. I've shared my kitchen woes with you. We've started house hunting (rental sadly) so hopefully I can dive back into cooking. Food is love! Healthy homemade food is true love.

They may not be world renowned but I love the baking show Nailed It! It definitely has cheered me up and I'm not even much of a baker.

  4. What a gorgeous rainbow of colour housed in a single (scrumptious!) dish, Ally. Just the pick-me-up one needs as we work our way through the final dregs of another lengthy winter.

    Happy cooking, my friend!

  5. That dish looks absolutely amazing, Ally! Unfortunately, my cooking hasn't improved during the pandemic. I'm still leaving most of the cooking to my hubby. I love browsing through cookery books more than I love cooking itself ;-) xxx

  6. That dish looks delicious! I did try baking a bit more in lockdown, but much like my cooking skills, my baking skills aren't the best! it's fun to try though! :)

Hope that your week is going well :)

  8. It's great you're cooking more. That's healthy (eating home cooked and prepared meals). Plus, it's always good to improve any skill we have.

  9. That looks amazing!! I'm so embarrassed, neither my husband nor I have had any motivation to cook so it's usually take out or, like, cereal. Going to the grocery store is still a stressful nightmare so we only go when absolutely necessary and aren't doing much meal planning the way we used to. But I'm glad you're taking advantage of the pandemic to hone your skills!

    1. What helps me is I like to cook. I understand that for people who don't preparing meals is a chore.
