Close To Home

Due to the pandemic's effect on travel, I've been exploring places close to home -- and finding some previously-unknown gems. Like Target Rock, a federal wildlife refuge hidden away in tony Lloyd Harbor.

Looking at a map for new places to visit, I saw a patch of green in this affluent neighborhood. Target Rock is in the village's most remote area. Surrounded by multi-million dollar mansions, the wildlife refuge is 80 acres of natural beauty, donated by a wealthy family in 1964. I'd never heard of Target Rock and it seems neither has anyone else. During my visit I was the only person there.

The refuge has several miles of nice trails which end at the beach with majestic views of neighboring Northport. There are comfy benches and even a free set of mounted public binoculars. I'll definitely return there with a thermos of hot coffee and the Sunday Times.

    1. It was! I felt like one of the millionaires who bought and developed the area a century ago.

  5. What a great find.
Here we have gone back to total quarantine weekends, we cannot go anywhere.
On weekdays women can only go out Monday, Wednesday and Friday - men the Tuesdays and Thursdays, just two hours for shopping groceries.
We were like that for 7 months (March to October) and are now back to the same.

  6. Serenely beautiful scenes. Being "backyard travellers" is a longstanding passion of mine and one that has ramped up all the more since the pandemic struck. Even in very small locations like ours, it's often astonishing just how many natural treasures abound within blocks or miles/KMs of our own front doors. Spending more time with them and deepening the bond to our location in the process is a positive that will only stand to benefit us once it's finally save to venture further afield again.

    1. Yes. We should explore our hometowns. There's stuff there we overlook.
