Our Childhood Homes
I'm sentimental, always have been. Last night I dreamed about the house I grew up in. My mind was flooded with memories and warm feelings. l lived in that house with my parents and brother during the most important years of my life. I recall every detail of the building and our experiences there.
Do you remember your childhood home? What was it like? Big or small? Fancy or plain? What are your feelings about the place? Have you ever returned to it since you left?
My home is in the same town where I live so I can pass by it if I feel nostalgic. As a child, I thought the house was large and majestic but when I returned after college, it looked like a dump. A small building in a crappy neighborhood. Our perspective changes as we grow up.
I lived there with my parents and younger brother Richard. While the house is still there, half of my family is now gone and I'll soon be the sole survivor of the four of us. I find that difficult to believe which is probably why I'm dreaming of earlier days. It's the only way I can see my mother and brother again.

Both of my childhood homes are still extant. The house I lived in from birth to age 4, I remember very clearly - I could draw a floor plan! One of my good friends rented the house next to it, so I was able to go see it. It must have looked odd, this lady standing in the street, staring at it. It was very small: living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom.
ReplyDeleteThe other house is a two-storey, much bigger, on a big plot of land. I have driven by it, but think about that time in my life often (it's where I lived from 5 to 20). Two of my next-door neighbours have died (one a long time ago, one a couple of months ago), so I've been feeling nostalgic.
Interesting stories. Thanks for sharing, Sheila.
DeleteI don't remember much about our homes. We moved often. I have a poor memory so all I remember are blurs of certain poignant or difficult moments in different houses. I wish my memory were better.

People like you who moved around a lot don't have the same relation to a single place like those of us who lived in only one spot. That's understandable.
DeleteYour post couldn't have come at a better time, as we are about to say goodbye to my childhood home, which has recently been sold. Although part of me is relieved that it has finally been cleared of my parents' stuff, the fact that very soon we'll close its door for one final time still hasn't really hit home. As I've lived there all through my childhood and youth, and my Dad lived there until he passed away just over two years ago, it's been such an important piece of my life. And like you, I'm sentimental, and always have been ... xxx
ReplyDeleteOh, wow. That'll be hard on you. My sympathy for the feelings you'll wrestle with.
DeleteHaving just been recently in the house I grew up in, I was surprised how large some of the rooms were.. But also how it's aged.
ReplyDeleteInstead of being beside a vet clinic and a tanning salon, those crackerbox "Skinny tall" houses have sprouted up all around. The property values have quadrupled, because as nice as those homes beside it look, the plywood isn't as sturdy or nice as the brick house I grew up in. (Even if they did PAINT it)
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
DeleteI haven't been back to my childhood town and house in a long time, I must go...I am a sentimental person as well and I am sure I will be in tears. Oh I miss those times! And I miss my grandparents, they used to live near us...Kisses

Nice pics. None of the houses where I grew up exist anymore. A couple of years before my dad died, he asked me to drive him to our old neighborhood. It has changed so much I had a hard time finding the location where our old house stood.
ReplyDeleteI don't have many memories of my early childhood homes as my dad was in the navy and we moved around a bit. Odd thing is where I currently call home is twp blocks from where my first home was, didn't kniw that until just after we bought the house and my mom told me.
ReplyDeleteI was in my first home till I was about 4. My ideal in a house is that house- a 1930'a bay window semi with 3/4 bedrooms! I loved it! My parents then divorced and we lived in a flat in Leyton. We then moved to the next house (round the corner from the old one) when I was 6 and I lived there till I was 32. It's not far from my school but I never go to visit it!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Westbury and my house was right on the parkway. I was out in Suffolk yesterday and every time I pass that way I find it special to look at the house where I grew up with wonderful parents and two younger brothers
ReplyDeleteSuch memories, right?
