People Like Me

When you're different, you don't expect people to understand you. For most of my life, I haven't had family or friends who grasped my struggles, who saw my true self, and who understood what I need to be happy.

Fortunately, society has improved. Forty years ago, information about transgender people wasn't readily available. Today it is. Of course, you need to educate yourself and that's an effort few people make, but the knowledge is attainable if you care to acquire it.

If -- and it's a big "if" -- you want to learn about people like me, there's a documentary that is clear, explicit and engaging. It's called "Just Gender." The film is narrated by Bebe Neuwirth who's won Emmy and Tony awards and is best known for her TV role as Frasier's wife Lilith.

The film is mostly interviews of transgender people, supplemented with lucid explanations of the complexities of our lives. It's not a Hollywood thriller but, for an educational film, it isn't a snore either. It's hard not to empathize with the plight of suffering people and you might cry once or twice. I did.

Just tossin' this out there... Oh, and here's something to look at...

  2. People like you are beautiful. I love all people, I don't care who they are or where they come from or what gender they are. <3

  3. The documentary sounds really interesting ... will have to go and see if I can find it. Thank you for continuing to encourage us to learn more and be more understanding of people who are "different". I guess we are more alike than we are different if we would just go and get to know people before we judge!

You look awesome in this little black and white number!

    1. Excellent point, Lynn. If we cast aside prejudice about groups, we can get to know people as individuals. Some are nice, some suck.

    1. That's what I learned from other bloggers. If you're gonna show skin, do it up top or down below but not both places.

  11. I too will be checking out the documentary. I do have a very strong sense that Trans gender folks are just as complicated, unpredictable, vulnerable, and "individual" as everyone else on the planet. It's so unfortunate that fear of differences causes so much pain in this world.

I'm not a fellow blogger but I am going to follow you. You are following many of my favorite bloggers so I know you a bit through them. Hope to learn more about you Ally.
Your striped is cute and the netted(?) plunge at the neck is very cool.

  13. This dress is very flattering on you ... curves! I have to remember this in my own choosing of clothing.

People are people and I like the ones who are kind the best. That is my litmus test for choosing people to be with.

  15. !!!! You look adorable in this dress.

And thanks for sharing the name of this documentary. Always looking for something to watch (and tired of "I dunno, what do you wanna watch?" *bangshead* LOL).

Anyway, I really want to learn more about transgendered issues; I like to think of myself as very open-minded, but I don't know all there is to know and this is a topic in particular that's evolved and been in the spotlight a bit more. Must keep myself enlightened :)
