Pants? Pants!

When I get a chance to wear women's clothing, I choose dresses and skirts. Appearing publicly as a man, I'm confined to wearing pants. In the past, it never occurred to me to wear women's pants; the very idea sounded backward. But I was wrong.

Women's pants differ markedly from men's pants and can be very attractive. They have different fits and a wider range of colors and prints. In some outfits, pants look as good as or better than a skirt.

I learned this fact from my friend Vale, a fashion-blogger in Italy. Vale's full name is Valentina and she lives on the Adriatic Sea. Vale possesses movie-star glamour and she dresses in trendy, colorful clothes. At first, I was sure she's a professional model. And her blog is as polished as any fashion magazine. No wonder it gets dozens of glowing comments.

Vale demonstrates many times that women's pants can be very appealing. My jaw has dropped at how amazing she looks in stylish pants. That reaction planted a seed in my head -- maybe I should try wearing pants. So...

For the first time, I started looking in the pants department of thrift-stores. Saturday, I found a cute pair that please me with their sleek fit and colorful material. I'm sure there's a name for pants that taper downward and are fitted at the ankle but I have no clue what it is. Anyone know?

Do you like to wear pants?

  1. My dear friend, first of all let me tell you I am flattered you got inspired to wear pants from my style...and thank you for your very kind, sweet words, you made my day ! I am surely no professional model, but the thing I love the most about blogging is this: getting to know fantastic people like you and sharing our styles and ideas ! These ankle lenght pants look great on you, love the color, the fabric is fantastic and I love it that you wore them with those pumps ! The outcome is very feminine indeed, and very chic ! I think you did great and this outfit is pretty timeless, thumbs up ! Many kisses

  3. Oh WOW, these are gorgeous on you. In fact, I want to wear them myself, they look so fabulous. In the photo, they have the look of shot silk about them. And the blouse is perfect with them, the detailing on the cuffs, collar and front sets off the trousers beautifully. You look so sleek.

  5. I've gone back to almost exclusively wearing pants. I love the look of skirts and dresses, but ever since I was a wee little kid, I hated the exposed feeling of them.

But hey, you're right, women's pants can be a whole lot of fun.

  7. Pure glam! I love my dresses but pants will always be my favorite, I think. The fabric looks gorgeous - the mix of colors reminds me of a peacock. You look ready for a chic soiree!

  8. I think it's amazing that you are trying the full spectrum of women's clothes. As you said there is such a range. The material for this pair is beautiful and looks very feminine. The detailing on your top goes perfectly with it. Thank you so much for your comments on my blog, I hope you know how much your words mean to me.

  9. These are very pretty-what a lovely shade and material. They are beautiful. Are this style called 'Ankle Grazers' or indeed, 'Tapered pants' perhaps? I'm an awkward one with trousers. I like wearing them but I like loose, wider-legged ones as I don't like the feel of tight trousers against my leg. Also, I am an awkward shape too. X

  10. I love your willingness to expand your dressing! These pants are wonderful - the shimmer and silhouette are so feminine. I'd call them slim ankle trousers, but no doubt there is a more specific fashion-y name. xox

  11. These do look wonderful on you. You chose well. I like the colour and the sheen on them.

I wear pants around the house but if I'm getting really dressed up I rarely wear them. I think I look better in dresses than pants.

I think the pants are called tapered. They look similar to cigarette pants but look like they might have more room.

  12. Yeah, definitely loving pants on you! These are really flattering and pretty to boot--a hard combo to find sometimes! I hope you work some more pants into your outfits in the future, because it's working! No idea on their technical name, but they have a very J Crew feel in my opinion...and at a fraction of the cost!

I have a weird body type. I'd love pants if I could actually get into them. I've given up hope! - A

  14. When you have legs as pretty as yours it does seem a shame to cover them up but you look so great in these pants. I would call, them cigarette pants. Smoking!

  15. I love that you are experimenting with pants in your looks. It's amazing to wear skirts and dresses, but sometimes a good pair of pants is the best. You look awesome by the way and I love the fabric. I don't even know what you'd call it but the fabric is awesome!

  17. LOVE these pants. The whole outfit is very elegant. I think the pants are similar to what I call cigarette pants and they may be my personal favorite style.

  18. When I was in high school it was all I wore, trousers, jeans, just pants. As I got older I learned to appreciate a good skirt and dress. As good as they look, i prefer you in skirts Ally: you know you've got killer legs.

  19. you look GREAT with these pants! I actually think this if my favorite look of yours ever! Love how the different pieces in the outfit matches and how super chic and elegant somehow sophisticated and business like you look! I wear pants more often than dresses because they are just more comfortable (especially in Winter where I need to wear three layers of tights underneath my dresses).
    Have a great weekend : )

  20. Another area to explore. You do know how to style. Even if this is the first time you are wearing trousers (sorry English before American with me) you have styled them perfectly. Lovely look. And yes I would call them tapered trousers (...) or 7/8.

  23. Ah! Those pants are fabulous. I enjoy wearing pants quite a bit, and have a small selection of pairs that fit me well. (That's the hardest part for me and lots of other folks, as I understand it--getting pants that fit right and are comfortable is HARD.) I'm definitely more drawn to skinny ankle-length pants anymore; I exclusively wore loose, shapeless jeans as a teenager, so I'm still having fun with them as a facet of form rather than strictly as function.
