Hit and Miss

I crave female experiences. Sometimes I get them, to my chagrin.

I planned a nice outfit today but when I tried it on, it didn't work. The clothes didn't fit well and they didn't go together. What worked in my mind didn't work on my body. Does that ever happen to you?

So, back to square one. I scratched the idea and started over. I pulled out several never-worn pieces from recent thrift-adventures and tried to make magic. Various combinations didn't work. Then, inspiration struck. A dress that's way too tight up top has a cute sparkly red skirt that appeals to me. So I cut off the top and wore what was left as a skirt. I'm pairing it with a sheer, frilly black top. And, of course, red heels. Every gal should have a pair of red heels.

These sassy pumps stop traffic. I need a license to wear them. They are the most expensive shoes I've ever bought ($99) but they're definitely worth the expense. They make my legs look shapely.

Looking at the pictures now, I realize that sheer is... sheer. I probably should have worn a cami underneath. Live and learn.

The outfit is okay. Not great but okay. Creating it was fun and that's enough justification for spending an evening playing with clothes. Please view the pictures in that light.

  1. I just love your photos and poses here. Great idea to make a skirt of of the dress. So cute.
Oh, yes. It happens more rarely now than in years past, but there are occasions when I'm dressing in something I've planned and the outfit does not look as I'd expected once I have it on. (My weight gain is much of the cause.) It happened this week one day before work and my room ended up looking like a tornado had hit it as a result of my frantic attempts to find something to wear and nothing at all seemed to work.

    1. Exactly. As annoying as it was, I'm glad I had the experience 'cause it makes me feel closer to female life.

  2. I love this look and I agree with you about red heels, we should all have a pair...I love red and I have red shoes, of course ! The sheer top is a little mistake we all did, sometime...it comes out with the flash light most of the times. But I like your look, so adorable ! Kisses

    1. Yes, I didn't notice the sheerness until looking at the photos. In real-life, it seems darker.

  3. Red heels are great, but with your gams you really don't need them. You have some of the best legs I've ever seen.

I always have issues with thinking in my mind it'll work and then it doesn't. Even my mirror lies. The camera is shockingly honest. I keep thinking I'm 6" taller, 20 lbs lighter and 30 years younger. The camera brings me back down to reality with a big bold slap upsidethehead.

At least you had fun... : )

    1. Danke. In my mind, I'm 24 years old. In pictures, I look like a Senior Citizen... *sigh*

    1. It completely alters the appearance of sheer clothes.

  5. If you wanted to go for a wild look you could wear a black or leopard print bra under the sheer shirt. :)

  6. This post made me giggle. I often realize that outfits don't work for one reason or another, but it's usually after I've been wearing them around all day. Like, I'll look at my blog photos and realize that a certain choice was a terrible one.

As for the sheer blouse, that's totally a "look" if you want it to be! Rock it, girl!

  7. Um, yes, I go through this every time I am getting ready to go out. I have all of these great outfits in my head and none of them end up working. And then I realize I have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. And then, of course, I need to go shopping! Being a girl is so hard. ;)

Honestly, you look gorgeous. I love the frilly red skirt. And those heels are amazing! And I think you can rock the sheer. I like the earlier comment about a leopard print bra underneath! Sexy!

  9. Sounds like you had the quintessential female experience: have a closet of clothing and not a thing to wear! ;P

I love that you cut the dress to make it work for you - and I completely agree on the red shoes: all women need a great pair!

  11. It definetly happens to me too that clothes look good on me - in my imagination only ;) when I try them on, they do no longer look the way I thought they would.

  12. You totally experienced a key lady moment in not having anything that worked. I hate those days, but they always end, don't they? Hope you're doing good.

  13. Well Ally, welcome to my world. When I dont put outfits together days before this is what happens in the morning. Its awful. SOmetimes I go through 6 outfits before I think it looks ok. Also some things look amazing in the hanger and then you wear it and look like a slouch. You said it well, sometimes they have to match the outside and the inside.

  14. Very fun meets charming outfit, Ally! I really like how the ruffles on the blouse echo the tiered ones on your skirt. The fact that the shirt has vertical ones, the skirt horizontal, is a great play on dimensions and adds a lot of visual interest to to this look.

    Have a fabulous Friday!

  15. I can see what you were going for. And some nights, it just feels nice to try on a bunch of different things. I'm thinking I need a night like that. I've not had the energy, but I need to reconnect with my clothes.

The shoes though - you can't go wrong. A pair of shoes that makes you look and feel great is worth it.

  16. Let me set the scene: evening. My room. Clothes strewn everywhere and my closet half empty because what I thought would look good and be comfortable was anything but. This just happened to me last weekend when I had to go to my boyfriend's sister's backyard graduation party. I was going to meet his whole family (from out of town and local), so I knew I had to wear something that would look good, but also enable me to feel very comfortable in my own skin. I ended up at Marshall's with my mom to return a dress she had bought for me and left two hours later with a bag full of clothes (everything is so cheap!). In it was a pair of white stretchy high-waisted jeans. When I got home, I had a problem: what underwear do I wear? I don't own thongs because screw that. I almost didn't wear the jeans because I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be showing off my underwear through my jeans. But then I found a flesh-colored pair so I wore the jeans.

  17. I plan outfits in my mind all the time. The thing is, I'm secure in my body image - but sometimes I want to look like a stick thin girl with no boobs in my tshirts (and stick thin I am not). It's taken me a long time to accept that I'm curvy and curvy girls look a lot different in clothing than say a super model. :D Keep trying the outfits you come up with though, that's how you develop your style - I used to wear sheer stuff with just a bra ( I was younger at the time though). I agree, I'd wear the top with a cami. :D

  18. Happens all the time!!! Great shoes!

  19. happens to me all the time, that's why i stopped "planning" outfits in high school. what looked good in my head the night before didn't always look right the next morning. nice way to re-purpose the dress.

  20. Ah, the age old "morning game." Possibly the sole reason my apartment always looks as if a tornado unleashed it's fury upon it. It's funny how something can look so right in your head, but if one little thing with proportion is off, it looks totally different in real life.

Those shoes are killer, by the way. Definitely a justified investment! (Btw sorry for the influx of delayed comments that are about to come your way-- I took a break from blogging so now I'm catching up by reading your past month of posts in one sitting haha!)
