Thrills

What's the most thrilling thing you've ever done?

For me it's clear -- my laps at a racetrack on a motorcycle going as fast as one's skill and courage allow. No words adequately describe the extreme excitement of those experiences. You dance, full-bodied, with powerful forces of nature, trying to tame them as they threaten to throw your body off the track in nano-seconds.

I realized this fact today after some spirited riding this morning and now watching MotoGP, the highest level of pro racing. Riding a sportbike fast exceeds all other experiences I've had in my life. The stupendous speed, the remarkable rush, the critical need for full attention, there's nothing like it.

What do you do for thrills?

  1. I'm glad you have something you love so much that gives you thrills. Hmmm...do I do anything for thrills? I do love a good long walk and a cycle but a safe, non-scary one- maybe I'm not the thrill type?

    1. There are all kinds of thrills. Seeing a child learn something you're teaching is a thrill.

  2. As the posterchild for introverts everywhere, I want to wryly smile and say "leave the house". :D

Naturally, I'm joking of course, and in fact I quite enjoy a bit of exhilaration - especially if I know in advance that it's coming my way. :)

    1. A thrill is relative and certainly one can prepare for adventure if that's one's style. I, for example, never ride without preparation and good gear.

  3. I agree 100% - There is nothing that demands your attention like riding a bike - Every cell in your body is alive.

  4. You are far braver and adventurous than I am! I literally don't do anything for thrills. I will say that visiting museums can be a thrilling experience!

  5. That must have been fun! I like how jogging/hiking on stony and uneven terrain demands concentration. Maybe it's not as exciting as racing on a bike, but it can be a fun exercise and it's something I enjoy. I have never tried bike racing, I'm sure it's quite an experience, especially at very high speeds. Riding a bike demands full body coordination not just mental concentration and is in that sense different than driving...I'm sure racing cars is fun too, but racing bikes must be an altogether different experience.

  6. I can only imagine the feeling you must get. I feel like I take my life in my hands every time I drive on the interstate in my little Honda.

I'm not a thrill seeker by nature. Though I did once parasail in Gulf Shores as a teen, and concrete "luge" in the mountains. Basically it's long concrete paths going down the hills in the mountains. You ride a lift up like you do when skiing, but then it's you, a plastic skid with a single hand break, and concrete paths.

I don't know whether they require a helmet nowadays, but they did not when I was younger.

  7. Ha, my thrills are more of the shopping variety! I am not a thrill-seeker either - I can't even think of anything like this!
