Home Sweet Home

I realized today that I've never shown you where I live. Here is our humble castle on the Gold Coast of Long Island...

Just teasing! I rode my motorcycle today to the Sands Point Preserve in Port Washington.

The castle was built a century ago by a man for his wife. It was modeled after Kilhenny Castle in Ireland. Turned out the wife didn't like it so she made him build another, more modern residence elsewhere on the 200 acres they owned.

This was the actual site used by F. Scott Fitzgerald for "The Great Gatsby." Now, it's owned by Nassau County and operated as a park. It's a beautiful place to visit on a sunny Summer afternoon.

  2. How fabulous is it that you can bike to see that and now have to travel to Ireland! So lovely and historic, given the gatsy provenance. What a pain the the @@@ wife, though. Thanks for sharing this!

Any home is a castle if one is happy. You can quote me on that.! ;)

  4. What a humble abode you have, dear Ally. :D

Could you fathom having a house - and size house - built for you and not liking it to the point of asking for another to be constructed. I can't even register such greediness in with my own personal values. Wow! It's great though that it's still around and that plenty of other people have been able to enjoy and appreciate it for decades now.

  7. How beautiful! I can't imagine having my husband build me a castle and then just being like, "Nah. No thanks! I'll take another."

  9. American castles are so interesting. They're out of time from their European brethren! And usually built by eccentrics, I think--although maybe it's the act of American castle-building that makes them eccentric in the first place?

    1. What an interesting, true observation. Yes, both the builders of castles here and the very choice to build them are eccentric.
