Portraiture

Doing portraits is surprisingly hard.  You try to capture the essence of a person's character while struggling to achieve several technical goals.  The difficulty is magnified when you're both photographer and model.

As hard as it is, I enjoy doing this.  The exercise uses all of my creative talents -- photography, lighting, fashion, makeup, etc.  The process is artistically rewarding.

Here, I decided to mix two colors I've never seen together: purple and gold.  There's purple in my necklace and new lip color.  There's gold in my top and eye-shadow.  I made special effort on my makeup (including false eyelashes, again) because the face is the focus of every portrait.

What do you think?  Of this as a portrait?  Of the colors?  Of the top and jewelry?  Of the makeup?

  1. Hi Ally, you are getting better and better. This is another gorgeous portrait of you. The top matches the color of your eyes perfectly. Your makeup is awesome. Love the falsies on you. Perfect. And the necklace is darling. About the colors. You can't go wrong with yellow (as in the gold) and purple as they are complimentary colors. The blue shade in your lipstick is a perfect match for the necklace. There is just one word Ally. PERFECT!

    Have a beautiful Sunday

  2. This is such a lovely portrait! If I want a decent portrait of myself, I need to get my husband to take it with the fancy camera. On my own, with my point-and-shoot, I always revert to a terrible rictus.

  3. Beautiful portrait. I really like how your backdrop and the golds in your top and your eye shadow and eye colour play off each other. The purple and lip colour really pop against them. It's hard to achieve a relaxed result but you've really got it here.

  8. I like all of it - the light, the slightly tousled hair, the smile, the lip color - but I'm not too keen on the necklace. But the important thing is that your personality comes through - it's lovely!

  9. Very pretty--are your eyes green? I am horrid at portraits and will now only do candids, even when we hire a photographer for family pictures, they have to candid.

    1. Yes. They look brown at a distance but, up close, you can see they're green.

  16. I agree with Lenya- you're getting better in leaps and bounds! Your eyeshadow is a gorgeous color and artfully applied, your lashes bring out your eyes, the lighting is soft and glowy, and your lovely smile and personality shine though. Awesome portrait, Ally (:

  17. Hehe, purple and gold are the Minnesota Vikings colors, so I'm quite used to seeing them together! But I have to say, I like what you did here! Everything about this looks so nice together and it's like a professional portrait - seriously! Great job!

  26. This is pretty much the perfect portrait. Coming from a graphic designer standpoint, I could easily see this as your website/about picture if you ever decided to come out more publicly because you're looking at your camera just the right way, the colors all work perfectly, and the composition is just right. Your makeup looks flawless, and the gold and purple complement each other wonderfully. I think you look just beautiful.

  27. I looooove the purple and gold, and the gold eyeshadow is awesome! I'm a little jarred by the lipstick, though...maybe it was intentional to keep everything from being too matchy-matchy? Your hair looks fab, too :)

Anyway, as for the portrait as a whole, I think it really allows your true beauty to shine through! It's very well-done and I love the soft lighting.

  28. These colors work quite well in combination. Makes sense considering how gold is closest to yellow on the color wheel and purple and yellow are complimentary colors.

    Great shot.

  29. Wow, Ally! Your make up is beautiful. Everything about it is lovely and perfect.
Love the soft sideswept bang and soft curl to your hair too. I would probably find this shade of lipstick one of my personal favorites. Could you share the brand and color, please? :)

    1. Sure. It has quickly become my favorite. It's "Hot Plum" (900) from the New Vivids collection by Maybelline. You can find it in any drugstore.
