How Short Is Too Short?

I've always been curious about the length of hems and shorts.  How short is too short?  Does it matter what age you are?

Miley Cyrus attracted some attention this week with shorts that some say are too short.  Here they are, with back- and front-views.  What do you think?

  1. If your ass or your bits are hanging out - it's too short.

I just can't imagine that being comfortable, looks like the shorts are riding up.

Personally, I don't care what age you are, hanging out all over the place never looks good.

  2. I'd rather not show my ass cheeks (except in pole dancing class, of course) in public, but that's a personal preference. Are her shorts too short for me? Hells yes. Are they too short for her? No, I think she's working them.

    1. I agree with Gracey--as I'm growing with my personal style and my opinions about our national view of clothing and dressing, I'm loath to tell someone else that they can't wear x, y, or z. I might not be comfortable in x, y, or z, but if they want to do it and they're comfortable, whatever! (I mean, I make exceptions to this re: appropriation, but as far as length and body-exposure goes, it doesn't hurt me any for someone else to bare skin.)

  3. There is a crease where the butt meets the leg. It isn't especially attractive. I'd cover it.

    1. Really? Because my partner begs to differ about its attractiveness, lol xD I keep it covered in public regardless, but he seems to be smitten with the idea of me buying shorts that short, haha =P

  4. I agree with the others, if your bits and pieces are hanging out its time to get longer shorts. Seriously why not just wear bikini bottoms if you are going to put it all out there like that? I dunno, we have lost the art of dressing and there has been a steady decline in tastefulness since casual Friday's erupted back in the 90's and blurred the lines of what is work acceptable and then when folks started showing their undies and wearing pj's out in public we went to hell in a handbasket. UGH people have some class, jammies belong at home and short short shorts not on anyone. I know I sound old fashioned, but when I get people applying for jobs in my office and they are wearing yoga pants and flip flops it makes me shake my head and think "Really?!" I gotta stop because now I am onto a whole fashion (or lack there of) rant.

  5. My comment didn't go through so I'll post again. I'm not a fan of short shorts and hems even if she does have the legs for it

  6. I love everything about her outfit. If you like it, wear it. Nothing wrong with showing some skin.

P.S. I live in Florida and I've noticed we wear less clothes here than in other states.

  7. Hmm I actually own a pair of shorts like hers- longer on the back though. I'd NEVER go out of my house with my butt exposed. I have to say in my defense that I wear them only with opaque tights in winter/autumn/spring :) (so yeah you can imagine I'm not a big fan of such short shorts!)

  8. If you've got it flaunt it, you're a long time dead. x

    1. I agree with Vix. She looks gorgeous in those shorts but I would definitely not get caught dead in a pair like that even if I had that gorgeous little figure.

  9. She can pull off shorts like these at the beach - i just think it's the wrong location.

  10. She looks great from the front but the back is way too short. I don't care what age you are your butt cheeks should not be showing unless you are on a stage with a pole! :)
She has amazing legs doesn't need to show any more to look great.

On another note though I decided to get rid of some of my short shorts as I approach my big milestone birthday. I feel just cause I can still wear them doesn't always mean I should.
An inch more coverage could go a long way. :)

  11. Yep, if your ass and ladyparts are hanging out they are too short. I dont care how skinny or cute a girl is, its just trashy. I think a little bit of mystery is much sexier. Heather

  12. I live in Alabama, and I, like Becky in Florida, have seen way less on people. It doesn't bother me so much. I also grew up watching "The Dukes of Hazzard" (cut me some slack, I was a little kid) and went to the beach when men's bathing suits were much smaller than they are now. I think part of the debate on what is too short, too low cut, too sexy relates back to the objectification of women and deeply ingrained body shame. Why are there more parts of women's bodies that are dirty or offensive? She's out shopping on a sunny day after a hard winter and she's young, and she's Miley Cyrus (post Disney whitewash). She's fine.

  13. She is working them and looks comfortable. Most people wouldn't look this good (decent?) in them!

  15. she looks super cute in that outfit but the exposed cheeks are a little much.

  16. From the front -- it's ok. The back... well, really, I've got underwear that covers more, and I'm still technically a newly wed, so that can't be saying much.
Of course, I have a poo coloured birth mark on my butt that would totally be exposed in those shorts, so that might colour my thoughts, too!

  17. That bit hanging out the back always makes me laugh and think thats the part that if a dog were chasing you they would jump up and bite.. hah hah

  18. If you wear shorty shorts out in public for everyone to see, what makes it special when you show someone special your bits? She looks great but I'm not sure that I'm the one who needs to see how great she looks...

  19. If the ass cheeks show, its too short!!! But I guess, Miley rocks the look!!! :)

  20. I gotta say it doesn't really matter for me.. if someone wants to go out wearing only underpants, then it's fine and let them (if the law is okay with it ;)). Why fuss, we all have seen butts before (I guess?) ;)

Personally I can wear anything that hides my butt but no shorter than that :D

  21. I think it's up to person to decide. I wouldn't go that short but I generally don't go short no matter what

  22. If I had her butt I'd wear those shorts. I think she looks awesome.

  23. Um...no butt cheeks in public. I don't care if she does have a smokin' body.

  24. I feel women should be allowed to wear whatever the hell they want. Society is much too concerned with whats okay/what's not okay with women to do. It shouldn't have to be that way. Why are these concerned not voiced for men? I see shirtless men who wear baggy pants / showing their underwear all the time. But no one complains about that.

However there is much to be said for the safety of women. Miley Cyrus is rich and has guards, so it's no issue for her. But we are unfortunately frequently "put in our place" by men who find it appropriate to harass us / violate us when we make the choice to look good/cute/sexy (or what we deem to be attractive). So my only advice to those who want to flaunt what they've got would be to dress this way only when out and about with friends. Power in numbers.

  25. From the front, they don't look so bad...but anything that doesn't fully cover your butt cheeks is just underwear. Glorified, denim-constructed underwear. Unless you're at the beach, keep that shiz covered!

  26. I think people can wear whatever as long as they feel comfortable in it, as long as it is in the appropriate environment. I mean, if you are at work, obey dress codes. It would probably be a good idea not to wear this to a wedding or a funeral either.

PS-YEAH, the head IS missing letters! :( I asked my friend Mariah to make it, (i don't know how to) and then I noticed the spelling a few days later. However, she just broke up with her boyfriend (who is also my brother) and I didn't want to pester her because she already has a lot on her mind. :(

  27. It's Tra-la-la ...

I don't think age comes into it - I do find it disturbing when folks make judgement calls as to whether what someone is wearing is 'decent' or not. Too close to the opinion that wearing 'unsuitable' clothing is asking for rape, to my mind.

To get back to the point at hand - always road-test your short item so you know just HOW far it will ride up when sitting down/raising your arms (or in my case, flailing about on a dance floor). And figure out how to get out of a car/low-slung chair. Of course you can always wear safety pants (see Helga). As to the rest - it is quite easy with practice to tune out the unwanted hum of other people's opinion :)

    1. ... and after all of that rambling on - I think she looks fab - but more to the point, she looks like she feels fab in those shorts.

  28. I know the look is in, but short shorts are better with flat shoes, not heels. Somehow you can look sexy not trampy with flats. The heels and the shorts are HOOKER. No matter who they're on. Otherwise, I think she looks good. Great hair, and gams.

  29. I think she looks great! Bodies are beautiful, and hers is young and especially gorgeous.

  30. Call me a prude but if I can see butt cheeks (or, God forbid, anything else in that region) then they're too short.

  31. I think she looks great. I also think we need to shy away from making rules for people based on their body type, age or our own preferences. If you don't like it, don't look. I wear short shorts now because I think they look the best on my body. I think they make my legs look long. I personally wouldn't let my ass hang out of my shorts, but then again, I don't have Miley Cyrus' ass. ;)

  32. Even with the best of legs, I think when your cheeks are out like this it's not a look I like. I'm not a fan of your bits hanging out. But, aside from that she's such a cute girl and I love that belt!

  33. Wow, she looks awesome from the front. But there's a little too much peeking out the back. I have to say I admire her confidence regardless; that part of it is great. Or you could ask is it confidence or insecurity (trying to get attention)? In her case, I'd say confidence. Me being me, I have to analyze these things from a confidence angle. :)

  34. I think that it all has to do with the occasion. I'm going to say for this situation that she's in: too much. I'm simply basing this off of what her friend is wearing: her friend is in Converse sneakers, and is clearly dressed down for the outing. Miley on the other hand is in heels and micro shorts. For me, this almost isn't about the shorts, but about the shoes. If Miley had worn sneakers as apposed to heels, I wouldn't have given the outfit a second thought. However with the heels, I feel like Miley dressed for attention, while her friend dressed as if she were to going hang out with a friend.

  35. Dang!!!!!!! Miley's got an arse to die for and I love her wearing a super-cropped hair-do. I think if she had long "Hollywood" hair, she'd look a bit tragic, but I cannot lie ... she looks amazing! xo

  36. She is gorgeous, even if she is runnin' 'round in briefs in broad daylight :o

  37. even tho she looks great, i think it's too short for walking the streets with heels.

on the beach, with slippers...fine. people expect that. but on the street? cover them cheeks!

we are a beachy state, and even though it's normal to see people walking around in their swim suits, a lot of the restaurants require you to put your clothes and slippers on.
