April Fool's Joke

It surprises people to learn that I'm a prankster.  In person, I'm quiet and gentle, which lures some people into believing I'm harmless.  That's an inaccurate perception -- the inner me is full of mischief.

If you've been here a while, you know I play April Fool's jokes on the blog.  Like this one.  Or this one.  I'm proud of the cleverness of these jokes.

Every year, I pull an April Fool's joke in person on my wife Robin.  I always get her -- which pisses her off big-time.  She gets annoyed that she fell for my prank and vows, each year, "You won't get me next year!"  Which, naturally, I take as a challenge.

Because Robin expects a joke, she looks for it and is hard to fool.  It takes planning, effort and skill on my part to evade her anticipation and alerted attention.  This year, my plan was to prank her in a way that bypassed her conscious mind.  To startle her on a visceral level.

It worked!

There is a corner in our house where Robin stores her handbag and cellphone.  It's her most sacred part of the house.  She reads her e-mail there, re-charges her phone and keeps her valuables on the ledge.  Just above the ledge is a window to the outside.  What would be worse if an intruder invaded the house at that place?  Nothing.  That would be Robin's worst nightmare.

Also, you should know that Robin's eyesight is starting to decline.  She needs glasses but rarely wears them.  So I counted that factor in...

This afternoon, Robin entered the house and proceeded to her corner.  When she was about six feet away, she spotted a rabid squirrel climbing through the window and invading her space.  She shrieked!  And involuntarily jumped backward.  Her heart raced like a NASCAR engine.

Then, seconds later, she yelled, "Damn it!!"  She realized she'd been pranked and was angry at herself for allowing it to happen.  Then, of course, she turned to me and said, "You bastard!"  Followed by some salty language I'm choosing not to quote.

Here are photos of the squirrelly invader.  Have you ever played an April Fool's joke?  Or been the target of one?

  1. You are such a bitch, Ally :P as the youngest, I always get pranked (sometimes I can foil it) so I emphasis with your poor wife. Rabid squirrel indeed!

  2. Haha! That's so great and I would have never thought of doing that. One time I flipped everything over in my cousin's apartment. EVERYTHING. Then I tee peed the inside of her living room. She got me back by putting hundreds of balloons on the inside of my car and saran wrapping the outside.

Thanks so much for your compliments on my photography. I just love finding new ways and angles of taking photos of clothes and other things in my apartment that I look at everyday. It's a nice little challenge for me. =] Your comments always make me smile though and always seem to be so well thought out.

  3. Heehee! You're a hoot, Ally. We don't usually pull too many pranks on each other. The worst the DH and I do is take each other's requests very literally, but then do what the intention of the request was.

I did put a piece of tape under his computer mouse once so that it wouldn't work. ;) I'm not very good at pranking.

  5. Hahahaha that is brilliant, your squirrel is actually quite cute, lol. I'm not much of a prankster but I have been involved in a few larger scale ones on fellow uni friends, most notably: Moving peoples cars during house parties by just picking them up (requires a large group or strong men and a small ish car) or stealing the keys and moving car - usually during my house parties where we would drive car to top of drive and block in with other cars! Filling an entire bedroom with balloons - some filled with water/glitter/shaving foam. Wrapping a whole room in news paper, as in every single item! This took hours and lots of helping hands. And we even once helped roll a giant snow ball, like 5ft round and rolled it in front of a mini so the car had no where to go, lol!

  6. Good prank, Ally, but it's not even April 1st. Is there still more to come? Your poor wife!

I always try to think of good pranks, but I never do. Now I've got some ideas from your other readers!

One year when I was a kid, my mother cooked a roast beef dinner for breakfast - that was pretty funny, but not what I really wanted to eat at 7 AM! We had eggs for supper that day.

  9. You are a bad bad wicked boy ... lol. I'm not a prankster myself but many years ago I worked with a women who revelled in played April fools pranks. She 'polished' the branch accounts telephone earpiece with black shoe polish and stuffed toilet paper into the mouthpiece (this was 1985 - gosh such a long time ago) then proceeded to call him and pretend to be a client ... I so wish we'd taken photos - he handled it well - I don't think I'd have been as polite as he was.

  14. Oh darling, I think I'm in love with you. LOL. :-) Matt and I have a circle war going - you make a circle with your thumb and pointer finger and try to get the other person to look. It's hilarious.

  15. I'm not one for pranks (pulling or being the butt of them) myself, but don't mind enjoying a chuckle over those that others pull (assuming they're not truly cruel), very much including yours here on Robin (any prank involving a cute plush animal is a-ok in my books :) ).

  17. Hahaa, I love it! I don't play April Fool's jokes because growing up my brother used to get me horribly. Then, I learnt to be clever at them create good pranks, and now nobody really does it anymore. They can be tricky! Hope you have a great week! /Madison xo

  18. I don't like pranks- too serious I suppose. But I did laugh at this story- once I saw the "squirrel." Very cute. I hope your wife recovered from the home invasion.

  20. Nice! I've been a part of some good group pranks, but nothing too over the top. However, I love the idea of getting someone really good....I love that you have a tradition of it! (And succeeding in pulling it off!)

  21. I love that you are still able to get her each time, how awesome! That has to be the cutest intruder ever!

  22. That's hilarious. Also, I'm not sure how I've managed to read your blog for more than a year and not realize that Robin is your wife. Now I feel like a bad bloggy-friend.

This year, I went into my boss' office while she was out and replaced a picture of her daughters with this: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mbncy4mGPU1rv7dkf.jpg. Needless to say, I got her pretty good :)

    1. Oh, that's so funny! Nicolas Cage can do some really bizarre faces. I just saw him again in "Moonstruck" and his first scene in the basement of the bakery is amazing.

  25. Dat squirrel looks like a bunny to me. I bet Robin was scared.

After we had a live possum wander into our living room, the teens thought it would be funny to buy a stuffed possum and put it in my bedroom. OMG, I lost it :o I still can't stand to look at that stuffed animal...lol.

  26. My husband was a prankster, so I enjoyed your story! Good for a smile on a Tuesday morning. Mischief is important in a relationship!

  27. Poor Robin!!! I feel for her! Thankfully my hubby is not a prankster as I think I would be in the same boat as Robin and get caught out every time. I agree with Lynne ... that sure looks like the Easter bunny who tried to get back inside.

  28. Hehheeeeeee!!! That was a good one, I'll bet it'll take a while for poor Robin to live that one down. I wonder if that poor harmless "squirrel" has been removed from the premises forever;) xoxo
