Are Men Stupid?

I saw a funny, but true, news story and it reminded me of something I often ponder -- How come you rarely hear of women doing the stupid stuff men do?

To keep you from thinking I'm exaggerating, I'll quote the news article verbatim:

"In what appears to be a party trick gone awry, an Australian man suffered severe burns after he put fireworks between his buttocks and set them off.  The New Zealand Herald reports that paramedics near Darwin, Australia were called to the scene on Saturday night, but the unidentified man had already taken himself to the hospital to be treated for injuries to his posterior and genital area.  'What must of seemed to be a great idea at the time has backfired, resulting in the male receiving quite severe and very painful burns to his cheeks, back and private bits,' Senior Sergeant Garry Smith said. Police believe alcohol could have been a factor in the firecracker-fueled accident."

In case you don't believe me, the story is here and here.

You never hear about a woman doing something like this, do you?  Why do you believe that is?  Are men genetically more prone to stupid behavior?

  1. I have to say that I think its 50/50.
You could have stupid women too, however for some reason women make an effort to cover it up and men show it off.. just a theory.

  2. What a crazy and stupid thing to do! Like Lorena said in the comment above, I think men like to show off more than women and that's why they end up in the news. Heather

    1. Okay, so the woman who blew up a firecracker in her butt kept it to herself... :)

  3. I wonder if it's more socialization than genetics. Boys are encouraged to take risks, while girls are discouraged. Boys are constantly encouraged to prove themselves to other boys, while girls don't always have this same pressure. Of course, I've known plenty of men and women who don't fit into either of those profiles.

  4. Agree with Diana 100%. Men can do stupid shit and it just gets passed off with the ol' "boys will be boys," comment. Girls do something dumb and it stays with them forever. Women aren't usually socialized to engage in risky/dumb behavior for whatever reason--fear of repercussion, etc.

  5. Men are sort of encouraged to keep pushing the limits of what's "smart" which is where shows like Jackass and Viva La Bam come in. Women are capable of just as much stupidity, but in my experience when a girl does something intentionally reckless she just comes off as being "one of the guys".... hmmm...

  6. I think that its just that the stupid things men do are more physical. When they end up getting hurt, everyone can see(cast on an arm, eyepatch). Women are more careful with physical things, I think. We aren't stupid, we're crazy.

“Here's all you have to know about men and women: women are crazy, men are stupid. And the main reason women are crazy is that men are stupid.”

  8. I think we're equal in stupidity/intelligence, just the way it manifests may be different.

  9. Interesting thought Shy, but my first thought was not male or female but the social and economical demographics of the area. I know that Northern Territory has a problem with alcohol and unemployment leading me to ask is this place one of those areas? Poor education standards also tend to lead to boredom and then to stupid and reckless acts. And the isolation of some of these areas also means less women than men. Then I looked up the area that it happened in and it seems to be a suburb of Darwin that is in a better part of town so that sent most of that theory out the window. Maybe it is just the men are stupid and women are crazy.

  10. I agree with the thought that men are more physically stupid. lol And just think about the fraternity hazings...and the ones that have gone too far. It's mostly men you hear about doing crazy stunts.

Stupid: Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care.

I myself am a bit of a worry wart. It may have started when I had my one and only daughter. One example: I was just explaining to my husband about how when I picked our dog up from the groomer there was the cutest, tiniest doggie wandering around the front area. So sweet, wanting me to pet him...which I did. But a guy came out a couple of minutes later and said "How did YOU get out here?" to the dog. He scooped him up with one hand and placed him back in the area where the groomers were doing haircuts. But I told my husband that little dog could have skidaddled out the door when I came in if he was prone to do that sort of thing and hyper. And there is a really busy street right there. He could have gotten run over! And so it goes. I'm always thinking about things like that...and safety. Telling my husband to be careful when walking down the basement stairs, etc, etc, etc, etc. So maybe women are more likely to think "protectively"...in the case of children and just overall.
    That was long. Sorry. haha

  11. Men are funny. Without them, I think women would be so bored.

  12. haha, i just chuckled. without men i wouldn't be able to roll my eyes and laugh at them as much as I do - mostly my husband and his antics and my little men.

  13. I'm still stuck on "...seemed to be a great idea at the time." :O...and "police think alcohol may have been involved at the time..."

    Ya think?

I've done stupid things myself, so I'm gonna refrain from opining as to which gender is dumber all 'round, except to say that when it comes to fireworks and/or gunpowder, males do appear to be somewhat ahead in stupidity...

  14. I have heard about many women doing stupid stuff with their kids though. But maybe we hear about men more because the news anchors are predominantly men? So men just report more about men so they don't get themselves into trouble by women? ;)

  15. I do not believe gender results on behavior. At all. Everybody is doing stupid things: first of all, not always we do realize it is stupid before it's too late, second of all, stupid things are various: so what is more stupid getting burns or think silly about your newborn baby?

  16. Whether it be male or female ... being stupid with fireworks is just stupid!!! Thankfully he decided to try it on hiself and not an innocent child or animal.

  17. It's socialization like many commenters have said, and the machismo men are conditioned to exhibit. Women do stupid stuff, too, it's just not usually quite so reckless.

  19. lol. I'm not sure men are more stupid, but I think they're more filled with bravado. They do stuff we think of as stupid, like jumping off bridges in mid-summer when the water is lowest, because they're showing off their manly manliness. Poor chickens, I feel sad for them. ;-)

Also, thank you sooooo much for your comment on my blog yesterday. It was probably the nicest comment I've ever gotten!

  20. I am surprised that no one mentioned that the guy with the firecracker up his butt was from Darwin. Have none of your readers ever encountered the famed "Darwin Awards". I have to think that you are familiar with Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection...".

    1. Yes, it certainly is ironic. Darwin's theory should be in everyone's mind.
