Nixon Watch

I like watches.  They're functional and attractive.  I was disheartened to hear young people are choosing not to wear them; when I asked how they keep track of time, my informant rolled her eyes and said people check their cellphones now.  Duh...  Old people...

A year ago, I discovered a young company called "Nixon" which makes cool, funky watches popular with surfers and skateboarders.  They're often sold in Billabong stores.  While I liked the style of their watches, their high prices gave me pause.  I figured I'd wait until a special occasion before getting one.

That occasion arrived today.  I won a big jury trial.  To reward myself, I stopped on the way home from court and picked up a Nixon watch.  In bright yellow.

My boy-clothes are mostly dark and dull.  There isn't much fashion going on in menswear.  A pop of yellow will be just right to perk up my male clothes.

By the way, I have a guest post going up on Beth's blog tomorrow.  I raise the puzzling subject of Wearing Leggings As Pants (WLAP).  This subject is confusing to me because although everyone says don't do it, I see dozens of women every day breaking the rule.  If WLAP is a common practice among women, is it still wrong?  Toss your opinion into the ring.

And here's the watch...

  1. I love this watch! It reminds me of a Swatch Watch I had back in the day. This is a fun addition to your day time attire and it looks great with the blue shirt.

On the WLAP rule, my rule is to cover the booty! As long as the booty is covered, you are good :) Heather

  2. The yellow is awesome. Great choice. I love watches and wear them all the time. I think I went through a period of about 8 years of not wearing one at all. But I think they are back in fashion. So, not old, but fashionable.

  3. Congratultions on the trial! So nice that you rewarded yourself with something special. I love the bright yellow watch. Like Heather, it reminds me very much of a Swatch.

I don't actually wear a watch - but I don't have a cellphone/laptop/Blackberry either. I found it made me too anxious about time - not wearing one forces me to be a little less freaky about it. And I can always find someone with a cell phone or check a receipt for the time-stamp.

  4. "WLAP" That term has gotten stuck in my head and will keep me quietly giggling all night.

Way to go on the jury trial! And the watch. Which rocks. I'm eye-balling those SLAP watches with the interchangeable bands, but can't seem to commit to a color :( I do have to wear a watch, and love wearing bangle ones as the more the merrier at a good Arm Party.

  5. AWESOME watch. I love it. I'm a little jealous of men's wear. You guys have a limited set of shapes, but the fit, cut, and fabrics can be so much better than the wildly different stuff for women.

WLAP... I am in the don't do it camp, and I don't. I know I occasionally will see a lady with a too-short tunic or tee and leggings and do think "Put some pants on". But I also see people walking around in fleece pajama pants with characters on them or leaving the house in actual house slippers. I think most of us would agree that night wear shouldn't be worn to the classroom or grocery store, but it still happens. There is no real fashion police that's going to jump out and stop someone from leaving the house in whatever they want to wear.

  6. Hi Ally, congratulations! What a great way to celebrate your success, and a fantastic watch. Being substantial of both foot (another size 11 gal) and wrist, I've been looking at "men's" watches lately but not finding anything I like nearly as well as the one currently in for repair, which I've been wearing since it was gifted to me in 1994.

WLAP is a no way(!) for me personally except as jammies, but I don't judge. When I was very ill, for a couple of years it was an accomplishment to leave the house at all, so I try to stay conscious of never knowing what someone else might be dealing with, what they might have had to overcome just to be in the world. If people are feeling great and having fun or being comfortable - fantastic!

I look forward to your thoughts on the matter.

  9. Great Watch!

Never heard the term WLAP before. But I think if you have the figure for it and the leggins are opaque it's ok.

  10. congrats on your reward and on occasion as well

WLAP is so common here. I'll read with interest because even if I have my own opinion fully built it'll be interesting

  11. That watch looks great, it reflects your fun and colourful personality. I can't bear crass designer watches, all bling and visible logos, it's like the wearers trying to prove something to people but usually failing miserably.
I don't wear watches, I'm an evil kind of witch and they just won't work. x

  14. That is one fabulous watch! I haven't heard of that brand before. My funkiest watch is one that looks like a guitar. I do love watches and have a bunch that need batteries replaced. I have a Lone Ranger watch that is fun. (Of course it shows my age!)
Congratulations on winning the trial. I wanted to be a lawyer, but made some mistakes and it did not happen. I think it is an admirable profession, in spite of all the lawyer jokes.

    1. Oops, I forgot the WLAP issue. I say do not do it. If your top is not long enough it is just not attractive.

  16. Ooooh, I LOVE that watch. Perfect for your male clothes, and your female ones, really.

WLAP is still wrong. I will be glad when that trend is gone.

  17. I love that watch! I'd buy one for my husband if I knew he'd wear it (which he never does). ;)

As for WLAP, I don't wear leggings unless I'm wearing a tunic to cover up critical parts... and usually only for a night out at a club where I know I won't be gawked at. I'd definitely never WLAP to work or even to the grocery store or mall. There's a place and time for them, I think!

  22. You know, the other day I was thinking about your male clothing and how dapper you looked when we met up in New York, and I came to the conclusion that if I were forced to masquerade as a man in my public life, I'd infuse as much fun into it as I could, as you've done with your fab yellow watch. I'll bet you could use it in a female outfit as well, which makes it just a little subversive, no? Perhaps you should mix it with a fun, summery dress and then you can carry the memory of that outfit the next time you're suited up with your smart watch.

And hey, congrats on winning the case! Btw, watches are coming back into style, I've heard. They're so retro. ;-)
