Keeping Track

Do you record anything in your life?

I've found that our memories are fallible. Very fallible. My recollections of the past are wildly inaccurate. For that reason, every New Year's Day I write the mileage of my vehicles on a big poster in my den. It allows me to keep track of how many miles I drove/rode the previous year on my cars and motorcycles. Reviewing the data shows patterns in my behavior that are often different from my perception of my road-activity.

I find value in this. Do you do anything similar?

  1. I track all the books I've read, including the title, author, year of publication, hardcover/paperback, when I started/finished, and my rating (and if it's a Book Club book, I note whose pick it was). I've done this since 2007-ish - it was a huge help when we needed a list of all the books we've read for Book Club.

L and I also track all the movies we watch (date of watch, title, home/theatre, top 2 stars, # of viewings, and rating). We include anyone's rating who watches with us too. There's not much value - I have a couple of little books full of the info, and I can't be bothered to data-entry it. :-P

My tracking system on the blog has been a huge help - by linking back to the last time worn, almost since I started in 2008!, has been a great boon for being able to do the Flashbacks.

    1. I wish I'd logged my movies; I'm constantly forgetting what I've seen and, five minutes into a "new" film, realize I'd watched it before.

I agree that a blog is a great way to keep track of things. It tells me dates, even years, of events that I can't remember.

  2. Like Sheila I like to track the books I've read, along with reviews and grade ratings. It's a good way for me to look back and to make recommendations as well!

  3. I sortof track movies and tv shows I watch. Usually using Facebook. With my current job (because I'm technically manager), i keep my own hours recorded in google drive (so i can share with my boss), but it's also allowed me easy ways of predicting future checks and schedules and estimating my income for the year (necessary for insurance).

Admittedly I liked keeping a blog for recording outfit and Price Per Wear (generally). Or noticing patterns in my outfit behavior. I actually ended up not liking that over time because I tended to dress based on algorithm or trying to even spread my usage of items instead of wearing what brought me joy.

I'd like to find a middle ground there. I also liked having searchable records of things I mentioned and forgot. I have a terrible memory and sometimes have to check myself.

Speaking of, the little oil change reminders with date and odometer reading save my butt!

    1. The middle ground is best, where we use records to help us but not constrain us.

  4. I've never kept track of anything much, but I find my blog very helpful in that respect. Also, I've been writing a journal ever since all the madness started back in Spring. I generally have excellent memory but it has been failing me lately. Too much to process, I guess. xxx

    1. How long ago did the pandemic begin? Two... three years ago? Time gets distorted in our minds.

  5. I write a daily email to a friend about our days. It is diary with discipline. Writing to someone else keeps me on track and also fosters our friendship. I also write an email to a different friend when I do yoga. This keeps us accountable and connects us. I don't really track anything, but I could through this system.
Oh yes, I was tracking my steps recently!
You are remarkably consistent with your driving over the years.

    1. That sounds like good practice. And, yes, my travel falls into a consistent pattern. (All the miles except for "Abarth" are on motorcycles.)

  6. Goodness, yes! I had a huge record of many different areas of my life (from medical records to lists of past + current penpals to reams of recipes I'd created myself over the years) prior to the fire we experienced. Since then, I've scaled back to a degree, but still keep track of many things. Some lists/records are handwritten, others digital, and an increasing number (when applicable) are being documented in photos - especially since I now back up a lot of the images I take in the cloud for safe keeping, no matter what life may throw our way!

  7. I don't track much but I have tracked the books I've read (mostly) on my blog since at least 2012ish even if I don't post it to the public!

  8. I keep track of the books I read, but I'm thinking of keeping a food and exercise log as well.
