My Essay Is Online!

A blogger-friend of mine (Mia) is an editor of a magazine that's online and in print. It's called Holl & Lane. Mia asked if I wanted to contribute an autobiographical essay. I did. Writing the piece was therapeutic and fun.

The essay describes an aspect of my life. You may learn something new about me. The essay went up today and you can read it here.

  1. Oh Ally, that was such a wonderful account. You left on such a positive and hopeful note and I hope anyone reading it who is afraid to express who they are takes your wonderful message of being who you are. The suicide rates are shocking! I had no idea. I also learnt about your parents which I didnt know. What a evocative writer you are!Xx

  6. What wonderful essay. I cannot imagine the struggle and just how soul crushing it must be to be told you need to be someone else. The fact that you are so upbeat and positive despite these issues is a testament to your character.

    Hugs to you!

  8. Beautifully expressed. I love that flower photo! All the warm colours together sing. Your strength is so inspiring, however I'm sure you would exchange the need for it in a heartbeat. The question is, would your life be as rich? xo Jazzy Jack

  11. I loved reading your essay and the mermaid picture is one of my faves.
One of the things I admire most is that from a very early age you knew it was not you who was wrong but society. A big hug.

  13. Such a beautiful and powerful essay, Ally. Your struggles as a child brought tears to my eyes. I know that it was a different era, and I certainly do not judge your parents, but stories like yours make me realize how much more difficult my son's life would have been and would be if his father and I weren't of the mindset that we are. We have always loved and appreciated him for who he is and I wouldn't have it any other way. We have come so far as a society, but we still have so far to go. Like you, I too hope to see the day where we, as a whole, are loving and accepting of everyone, no exceptions.

  14. I cannot imagine how crushing it must feel to be rejected so harshly for simply being true to yourself. Your courage to be true to your own spirit in the face of that is so astounding and uniquely inspiring Ally.
