Girl Colors

The palette of colors available to women in fashion is wide. There's practically no hue off-limits. That's not the case for guys who worry if a color makes them "look gay" or appear effeminate. Men censor their color-selections and chide buddies who cross the line.

When I wear female clothes, I explore the full range of available styles and colors. Nothing is out-of-bounds. My masculinity is not at stake so wearing pink or purple or pastels isn't a problem. To the contrary, I'm attracted to feminine hues.

My eye caught a skirt-suit at the thrift-store today. It's a color I've never worn. In fact, I don't even know what it's called. The best I can say is it's green but I'm sure there are better words denoting its particular shade. What would you call it?

And what do you think of the style of the suit? Should I take a licensing test for real estate broker?

  1. Ooh...love the sparkly citron suit! That collar detail is darling. It really fits you well. I'd say you did very well on this purchase. It looks vintage.

  2. I love the collar. Besides experimenting with colours when I thrift shop (which is the only shopping I do), I like to find unusual details like that one. The suits are looking very good on you, in my opinion - trim and elegantly professional, and the slightly longer length brings out the excellent line of your leg. (I've read that a skirt or dress should end at the narrowest part of your leg above or below the knee, and find it to be true for myself at least.)

  3. The bow detail on the collar frames your face so prettily. Not sure what I'd call this color but it suits you. The fabric also has a very pretty sheen to it.

  4. I would wear that strikingly elegant suit in a heartbeat, too. Love! It sings on you, Ally, and certainly conveys a strong sense of femininity. You look as beautiful as an autumn sunset in this dazzling gold ensemble.

    Happy Halloween Eve wishes!

  5. I agree- women seem to be able to wear any colour and I take full advantage of that. I hate that men have such a limited range- I absolutely love a man in pink. It's great that you tried this colour- the whole outfit is flattering on you and well put together.

  8. Can we agree to call this a "citrus" gold? It's a beautiful garment and you wear it like a lady who's been invited to attend the private preview of an exhibition in a museum named for your family. (This suit is being discreet about its price tag -- which screams $$$.) Clever you, doing the Marlene Dietrich maneuver with tan shoes matching the hosiery rather than attempting to match shoes to dress a la the bride's maid.

  9. Gorgeous suit - I shall call it Pistachio, although the colors of women's clothing are truly baffling. you look like the first woman president!

  10. Ha, I know that colour - it's called celadon. When I worked in women's clothing in 2000 that was a very trendy colour.

This is a gorgeous suit on you, Ally!

Oh and if I were asked, I'd say that the colour is apple green ?

  13. I agree with citron because it seems like the right color. It's a yellow green stone that's so pretty. I have some jewelry in that shade. I think you look lovely and I can't believe you sold all those houses already. Wink!

  14. I love Beth's description of 'citrus gold'. I would've said it was citron, also known as citrine - like the semi precious stone due to the yellow tones in it. You've chosen well as citrine's healing properties are related to success and prosperity, self confidence and self esteem! You look super elegant and self assured in it and I love the bow detail. And what a bargain price to boot!

  15. Chartreuse? You look FABULOUS in it, its very elegant and i actually think it has a glamorous retro vibe. I love it! You my dear could make a paper sack look beautiful. The thing I love the most about you Ali is that you embrace everything feminine and are adventuresome, me on the other hand have a hard time doing this because of the areas I feel flawed. I wish I could be as confident in my fashion choices.

    1. Thanks, Dar. What you see as bravery is often really just a willingness to experiment. I don't know what things are going to look like before I actually try them.

  17. Oh my gosh! You really DO look like a realtor. My mom is one and she's worn outfits that look like this.

That color is divine on you. I'd say it's a pistachio color. It's a lovely hue and you look beautiful in it.

You know what? I love it when men wear pink or purple. It shows that they are confident in their masculinity.

  18. Citron, chatruese, peridot...what ever the color it looks fantastic on you! You are right, women have many choices when it comes to colors. My husband will wear pink and lavender shirts , and I am glad.
Realtor - lawyer, I can see Alicia in the Good Wife wearing this.
    Awesome!
