Riding Along The Edge

I have a tendency to push the envelope to see how far it will stretch. I try new things as experiments. Of course there are fiascos, but there are also successes. And there is always learning.

Here's a second outfit made from clothes I thrifted in Atlanta. The top is very feminine. It called out to me from the rack. "Ally!" it said, "I'm over here!" I almost put the top back, believing it's TOO feminine but is there such a thing? That would be like being too wonderful or too tasty. I have a strong urge for feminine apparel and this example appeals to me. Besides, now I can serve cocktails at a Vegas casino...

In person the top looks much more puffy and frilly than in these photos; the fringe along the neckline and sleeves are more pronounced than you can see here.

I recognize that most mature women would not wear this top. But I'm not them. Despite my age, I'm terminally immature and my desire to swim in the ocean of female life cannot be discouraged by mere propriety. So if you visit my blog, you'll see crazy adventures in fashion. If nothing else, it's entertaining.

  1. Is the neckline feathers? It's hard to tell. I do like the added texture. And you really do rock a pencil skirt.

    1. It's fabric but puffy and frilly which looks like feathers.

  2. Love the black and white with red lip, and the fringy details of the top. You're going to bring someone good luck at Vegas. ;)

  3. This: "I'm terminally immature and my desire to swim in the ocean of female life cannot be discouraged by mere propriety" = YESSSSSSSS!!! Love the wording as much as the sentiment.

I don't think you look Vegas-y at all. In fact, I really like this and think you chose a great ensemble! I was really excited to see how you'd style this top after you bought it. Great job!

  4. Ooh, it does look fluffy and fun! A bit like a feathery vintage nightie in that sense! x

  6. Good for you for embracing your "terminal immaturity"! I think it's essential to preserve that sense of playfulness no matter your age. Style is a particularly fun way to do so. The fringe of your top adds movement and whimsy and frames your lovely features quite nicely!

    1. Thank you, Carrie. My playfulness is my favorite quality 'cause it's an antidote to the crushing hardship of life.

  7. Ally--you look fantastic! This is one of your best looks ever! As you know, I have a specific viewpoint (as a woman, like you, born in 1957). Yes, this is a very feminine look, but I don't thnk it's the least bit silly-frilly.

Most woman of our age would wear a camisole so the skin below the bra and above the skirt isn't visible. fyi, when you can see what's underneath an item of clothing (how we can see the waistline of the black skirt and your abdomen through the white top) is called "grinning." Isn't that a hoot?!

    1. You're right! Thank you for the education. I wasn't happy with what could be seen underneath but it never occurred to me to put on a camisole. That's the perfect solution. You're the best.

  8. I am a firm believer that you're never too old to wear what you want! And I love that you love this top! Swim in that ocean all you want!!!

  9. I have a hard time with transparent tops but I think with a basic cotton top underneath it can look really good. I love how you play with clothes and fashion and how you try out all different kinds of styles and looks!
Have a wonderful start in the week!

    1. Thanks. I didn't intend the top to be transparent; I simply didn't know I could wear a camisole underneath. That suggestion makes good sense.

  10. I think it's wonderful. And I agree, a cami, which is my favorite undergarment. And soon will be yours, too!

  11. This is a really chic, beautiful, and very becoming outfit. I think this is one of my favourites you've shared with us so far and I don't feel that the top is OTT feminine - not, mind you, that I've ever seen such in a negative light in the slightest. I'm the first to call myself a girly-girl and dress the part on a frequent basis. :)

Have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day, my friend!

  12. That IS a fun top! I don't think one can ever be too feminine or girly - it's a joy many don't get a chance to experience. I say embrace it whenever the opportunity presents itself!

  15. Yeah, it is nice that the top looks so modest at first (the white colour) and then you look closer and see all the lace and frills and the cut.
    Good find!
