Oops! My Slip Is Showing

I've been diving into vintage fashion this year.  It's my new hobby.  A big part of the vintage world is lingerie.  And for good reason.

Back in the old days, adult women wore slips and various undergarments that you youngsters wouldn't recognize.  Girdles, seamed stockings, etc.  Just watch an episode of "Mad Men" and your eyes will open at the multiple layers of clothing women wore.

Here is Scarlett Johansson wearing a full slip for her role in the recent stage production of "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," a drama set in the past.

With the help of my mentor, Jessica, I recently sampled the delight of seamed stockings (properly known as "fully fashioned stockings.")  Now, after I fruitlessly searched for a pretty vintage slip, Jessica again comes to the rescue -- she graciously gave me a vintage half-slip which I'm wearing below.  (I'm also showcasing my new boots, which I got on discount, only $24.99 at Aerosoles.)

When slips were more common in the past, they were made with more variety and adornment.  The few slips I see in stores today are plain, undecorated and boring.  Jessica assures me that vintage examples have more aesthetic appeal and I see she's right.  This slip has extensive lace on its bottom, with more intricacy and appeal than the slim strip of machine-made lace now manufactured in China.

Do you ever wear slips?  Did your mother and female relatives?

  1. LOving it! I had a huuuuge collection of vintage lingerie- about 4 huge bins of it- recently "lost" by a business owner who I did consignment in. Sucks, but c'est la vie. Vintage lingerie is the best!

    1. Try these Etsy.com shops!

      1) sliplovin66
      2) TheSlipShoppe

These two shops work together and have an astounding collection of more than 2000! Mostly from the United States, but many more from overseas like, Japan, UK, Great Britain, Australia, Poland, Malaysia, etc.

I will have them check out this page and they can tell you more about it.

  2. I love vintage lingerie even though I only have a few pieces. I have a 40s slip I wear as a dress when I am slimmer. My mom used to wear a slip and nude hose daily! I love those boots-- seriously thinking about buying them!! That sale is ridiculous and I don't know if I can resist.

  3. I have one slip. It's modern and necessary for tights wearing. I have always wanted to buy more, especially a really nice one. The GW carries frilly things, but I always psych myself out of browsing. It's an odd anxiety I've never really considered, but something always drags me away from even looking at the slips or bustiers even though thrifting one would be the best place to start.

  4. Also to answer: My mom wore them only when necessary to dress up. My grandmother wore pants with hose every day, and rarely, if ever, wore dresses.

  5. I was the family member lucky enough to have inherited my grandmother's slips. Not necessarily 'vintage' (more 80s and 90s than 50s or 60s) but a lovely collection nonetheless, including a pair of pettipants style ones in black, several different lengths in white (one with a three-teired lace hem) and a full slip. Prior to that, I owned one half-slip and a modern 'plain' nylon-spandex full slip. I only wear them under dresses and skirts that are sheer or ones that I know have 'cling' issues.

Vintage ones are gorgeous enough, I think the hemlines should be shown (an extra layer of texture to an outfit... well, certain outfits it's appropriate for).

  7. I'm back to tell you I totally bought the boots, but I had to go up a half size... Fingers crossed they are not too big. I had a code for an extra 20% off. Too freakin' cute.
    The SALE got me!

  8. The boots are so cute.
Vintage lingerie is so much more high quality than it is now. I found a beautiful Lily of France vintage robe at the Goodwill for $3.00. It is a peignoir style and it has the most beautiful and lush lace you can image. Someone didn't know what they were pricing!

  9. I personally don't mostly as I rarely wear dressed and skirts. Although I really adore that pieces and own one myself (I usually wear it on special occasions).
    You boots are lovely!

  10. I adore vintage slips, camisoles (the top half) and half-slips (the bottom half). I have a beautiful Christian Dior slip that was Union Made in the US - it's vintage 80s, which I think is the last good era of underthings. I do have some amazing vintage lingerie that is incredible quality.

  11. Heavens yes! I wear slips that my mother and grandmother had. Lovely nylon ones with embroidery and lace, an exquisite cream silk brocade one that is so easy to wear.

Clothes fall so much better when a slip is worn, and they also add a measure of modesty should the wind flip skirts.

I've also got a couple of inherited half-slips - including a short floral one for use under mini-dresses.

Indeed, welcome to the wonderful world of vintage lingerie....

  12. First--those boots are stunning!!

I wish i could find vintage slips in my size. i remember wearing them. I still do but the modern ones aren't as nice.
Maybe i should just make some for myself!

  13. Ok I just love those boots, I have to get that out of the way first - they are fierce!!

I do own a couple of slips, I have only worn them when I've really needed to dress up for something. I can remember my mom wearing one quite often - because I think people used to dress up more for events when I was young than they do now. Just an observation anyway.

  15. HA! I love the boots!

I wore slips as a child under fancy dresses, but as I got older I stopped. I think most clothes I buy come with a sheer under-dress/slip kinda deal. Although sometimes people still ask why I don't wear a slip.

  16. Oh I have been collecting vintage slips since I was 12 and my grandmother gave me some of her mother's! I sleep in them more often than not and I feel like a damn princess! Those boots are incredible, and I'm sure make your already gorgeous legs go on for miles.

    >your comments on my blog are always so thoughtful and nice and make my day. I swear I'll have no confidence issues a day in my life with you around :)

    1. OK, I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm a 42 year old man who loves women who wear slips. I think they are some of the sexiest pieces of lingerie a woman can wear! Maybe I'm just old fashioned or have an old soul, I don't know. But when I want to date someone, I tend to look for a woman with the same taste; which is next to impossible these days!

Is that weird of me to want that? Just curious.....

  17. I'd like one but at the moment I don't need it. I do have an underskirt though, its plain black with lace at the bottom which I use for shorter dresses. It's fun to wear

  18. Love the boots! Super cute!

I have found some great vintage slips at thrift stores. I have 2 full and 4 half slips that are beautiful.

It takes a bit of digging, (and a good washing!) but you can find them.

  19. Those are killer boots !
AND YES, my grandmother wears slips :) and have to agree that vintage slips have a lot more detail to them than the ones they make today.
I recently purchased a slip too - its skin toned and works perfect with all those light fabric dresses and skirts that were meant to show your undergarments.
They make my dresses look so much smoother -

  20. Oh and the Lorena from 10 years ago would have died at the thought of wearing a slip!

  21. Slips were so cool. May be they will make a come back.
    I am loving your boots.
Thanks for encouraging words on my daughter's hair cut incident. Yes, it bothers me more than her. I can't help it. I never thought it would when this happened to my friend but I now realize how she felt.

  22. Those boots are gorgeous!!!! The lace on that slip is beautiful.

  23. I remember having a few slips when I was age 10 and under that my mom had me wore depending on what type of dress I had on. I have a few modern slips now that I just wear as dresses. I don't think I'm enough of a lady to rock a fancy lacy slip like yours!

  24. Those boots are amazing! Love the delicate detail on the slip, very dainty. I have a couple of vintage full slips but they're mainly for sleeping in. I am sure my grandma would have worn one everyday.

  25. I do own a slip! But it actually was very very difficult to find...It's just a simple black one, and not really even the style I wanted. I needed one because I had cut the lining out of a sheer black skirt, and I wanted to replace it with a slip (made sense at the time...)

The boots are awesome! And I bet they are super comfy too because they are Aerosoles, right?

  26. GAH vintage lingerie? Come sit down with me and let's have a cuppa, then we can play dress ups. I have an absolute addiction to vintage underwear, particularly 1930s knickers or scanties, which was their nick-name I believe, and I have GOT to stop buying 1930s-40s slips and nighties. They're WAY too gorgeous to cover up so to me they are dresses;). I adore the generous adornment of lace on your beautiful new half slip and holy heck aren't fully-fashioned stockings the shizzle? Your BOOTS!!!!!! **faints** xoxoxo

  27. I wear slips all the time. I think more people should. Especially vintage slips. I find most of them in thrift shops. Some might think that's gross but I just wash them in hot water and they're fabulously awesome.

  28. I do wear slips, both half and full. But you're right--the modern ones are not pretty, that's for sure...utilitarian at best.

  29. Yes, I do! I adore vintage slips and undergarments, and have many vintage slips, but I wear a few as dresses as well. lol. Look at those boots! xo

  31. Coming a little late - I am a devoted slip wearer (under dresses), after having useful directions from my Grandma. Mine are fairly plain but silk, and stop the dreaded cling, as well as adding warmth. Wouldn't be without them. Yours is beautiful xx

  32. i most certainly wore slips growing up, purchased from a department store, like wool-worths! or mccrory's. i kinda miss those days, before wal-mart and the like took over.

  33. I always wear slips. They prevent see through skirts and keep your tights from sticking to your dress.

When I go to Paris I plan on looking for some fancy slips. I know they're known for their fancy underwear and whatnots so I thought a slip would last longer than a bra!

  34. I have tons of slips, and not just because my mom and maternal grandma insisted they be worn. They actually make clothes hang better and decrease static cling.

  35. OK GIRLS!

A friend of mine just texted me and told me to check out this page! I see she posted a little history of my shop on Etsy.

My name is Kelli Richardson and I have a slip shop on www.etsy.com called TheSlipShoppe. I am also partnered with another slip shop on Etsy called sliplovin66.

Together we have been collecting vintage slips since the late 80's and both have accumulated a huge collection.

I personally have collected slips from all over the world; which some I will NEVER part with under my own doing, but I have a mass of other that I will; hence the Etsy shop.

I have slips in almost every style, color, and size. I have them from the 50s thru 90s and beyond. I have them in mostly all colors. I have florals, formals, slip sets, and custom made slips. Most are nylon with a few exceptions in satin, polyester, and silk.

If there is anything in particular that you are looking for that is not on my shop or the other, please feel free to email either one of use and let us know what your looking for, whether it's a style, size, color, print, or fabric, and we will be happy to browse through our collection to find just what your looking for.

It's funny. If you look at the pictures from both shops, you will see that most were taken from the same location. It turns out that we were both only a mile apart from each other, but took us about 10 years to find each other! LOL

    TheSlipShoppe - secondhandslipshop@live.com

    sliplovin66 - sliplovin66@hotmail.com

You can send an email to either one of those, or you can simply send us a message on Etsy. I think using the Etsy messaging would be faster. I check that one daily.

    Please come check us out!!

    Thank You

    Kelli
