At The Opera

My first event for Cara's challenge involved casual-wear; this second event requires formal-wear.  I wanted to try something completely different.

Believe it or not, I own a tuxedo.  A real one.  The cost of renting a tux is absurdly high so if you have occasion to wear a tux more than two or three times, it's cheaper just to buy one.  So I did.  In my forties, I was going to black-tie affairs often.

Both the male and female versions of this challenge took real effort. To do them justice, I'm going to devote separate posts to each.

I had fun doing the female outfit for this event.  The formality gave me an excuse to glam things up a bit more than usual.  More makeup, fancy long gloves, elegant pumps.

One of my favorite movies is "Moonstruck", which won Cher an Oscar for Best Actress.  It also stars Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis.  There's an important scene in the film where Cher and Nicholas Cage go on a date to the opera and the majesty of the event overwhelms them.  I've been to operas at Lincoln Center in NYC and that reaction isn't an exaggeration.  You really are stunned by the dignity and history of the art-form.

Have you ever been to an opera?  What would you wear to one?

P.S., Yes, I know my tie is a little crooked.  When you photograph yourself, stuff like that happens.  I don't sweat it.

  1. Smashing! You look very sharp. I've never been to an opera, only plays/musicals. When I saw Frankenstein with Lynne, we both wore cocktail dresses and pumps. If I were going to the opera, I'd want to wear something as lovely as Julia Roberts in her Pretty Woman opera gown. Something like: http://www2.pictures.stylebistro.com/it/Valentino+Spring+2013+Nn05VHIcJtAl.jpg with long black gloves and a pair of secret comfy boots.

  2. well look at you...looking wonderful in the tux! i always assume men have an easier time getting ready (shirt + pants + shoes = easy), although you mention this male version took just as much effort as the female version. i guess both males and females have their challenges.

  3. It's not crooked, it's jaunty! I love this look, so classy (and so James Bond!)

  4. I agree, very James Bond. That is an awesone tux. I used to go to Mardi Gras balls when I lived in Mobile, but those dresses were very sparkly, so I would be lost with an opera.

  5. Oooooh, that is a FABULOUS tux.

  6. See, here's the thing about male fashion... a girl has to have a new dress for every red carpet, every wedding, every event. It's expensive and it's wasteful, but people talk if they don't. But men? men throw on a tux, and bam, they look great. That's it, I'm going out and buying myself a tux!

  7. I'm going to join Cara and buy a tux too. Truthfully, I've always wanted a feminine version of a tuxedo....ever since I saw the young Tatum O'Neal at the Oscars in her tux for Paper Moon. I convinced my mom to make one for me at the time. I need one now!

Love the tux on you...very dignified.
I've never been to an actual Opera, but some friends and I are on the lookout for an Opera production in Chicago.

    1. Tatum was adorable in that. I hope you'll find one for yourself!

  8. You look amazing in TUX! I feel so sad men wear it less often lately even to opera houses.
I've been to opera my last time this November (December?) and it stuns me all the time. it's so very emotional! I this I would get myself a tux as well.
for Opera I usually choose to wear LBD or a suit

  9. I love men in suits! Never been to the Opera but I would love to, maybe one Day I will get the chance.
I would wear a long Dress, with long gloves and with amazing looking boobs in that Dress, haha

  10. Shy, you have two shadows in the last picture - like the two different outfits you could wear to the opera..?

You look very sharp in your tux x

    1. The dual shadows appear from the lighting I use. It's a conscious choice -- and a metaphor for my dual nature (both masculine and feminine).

  11. I've been to the opera! It was Aida - a traveling show that landed at the local University. Mind-numbingly dull, that one. Since then, I go to the Fathom Events broadcasts of the New York Metropolitan Opera at a local theater and they are so much better. Plus you can eat popcorn. And wear jeans.

I was young, so I probably just wore heels and nylons and a skirt and blouse.

  12. You look dashing in a tux! I saw your comment on Twitter about auditioning for the next James Bond movie and I say YES you are totally Bond worthy!

I have seen Carmen, but it was in more of an experimental theatre setting, so dressing up was not required. I would love an excuse to get all dressed up to go to a black tie type event though! Can't wait to see your female version of this one.

  13. You look gorgeous in your tux! My husband bought a vintage one - it's come in very handy. I have been to the opera, but only local, so not as grand. One of our friends used to be in the chorus so would get us tickets. I liked it, but didn't love it. Of course, we dressed up to the nines!

  14. So classy! You look fabulous. I wouldn't even know what to wear to an opera...I'd probably show up embarrassingly over- or under-dressed!

  15. BOW TIES ARE COOL! Also, you look so awesome!! I have never been to the opera, sadness. Or seen Moonstruck, more things to add to my list!

  16. I think I saw Moonstruck, but so long ago that it is a vague memory. I've never been to the opera but I have been to several ballets and and plays at the theatre. I love to dress up and I love a tux! You look great! I made my wedding black tie optional just to get the men in tuxes! Can't wait for the lady look.

  17. I wanted to go to the San Francisco Opera a few years ago when they were doing Faust over the summer (Faust is very near and dear to my heart) but I couldn't afford it as a college student. I did go see one of my best friends in a choral performance recently, though, and there were probably ~150-200 singers, so that was impressive too! (P.S. That tux is pretty snappy.)

  18. WOW - so handsome Ally!
I have been to 2 private opera functions and one public one. It was about 3 years ago and i loved every minute of it. I wore cocktail attire for all-

  19. Dashing look! :) I used to enjoy going to the opera many years ago, but this was well before I started thinking about style, so perhaps it's better that I can't remember what I wore.
I'd love to wear something dramatic to the opera - a tulle skirt, maybe, or something sequined/beaded/embellished.

  20. What an absolutely dashing figure you cut! Is it just my interpretation of your pose, or were you aiming for a bit of a James Bond vibe in the shot?

I adore the opera! When we lived in Toronto we had a chance to attend two (and I'm sure would have attended others if we'd kept on living there), and I made sure to dress to the nines both times. There isn't an opera house for hundreds of miles of where we live now, but I like to think I'll get to see others elsewhere one lovely day.

    1. I had no idea about Bond when taking the picture. I grasped the reference when readers later brought it up, but it wasn't intended.

I got the idea for the pose earlier in the day: I was in court, speaking to a clerk, when I spied a cubicle used by another (female) clerk. In her cubicle, she had a magazine ad cut out and pinned to her wall. Same pose by an elegantly-dressed man, younger and more handsome than me. I figured if she found the pose attractive, you guys might. Plus, I like it.

  21. You look quite fit and handsome in your suit! I can only imagine how amazing an Opera at the Lincoln Center must be. Looking forward to the female version.

PS- The fact that you don't sweat the small stuff like your tie being a bit off makes me like this that much more. :)

  22. I'd wear my 1940's green dress to such an event (which you can view here if you were interested). You look like a fine fellow in that tux

  25. Very nice. I'd love to go to the Opera sometime and pretend like I live some fancy shmancy lifestyle.

I've only worn a tux once. It was for Junior Prom and my girlfriend wore a dress. By Senior Prom, we had broken up and I was dating a guy and he wore the tux. I prefer wearing dresses--better colors!

  26. Wow, same words I would have used....dashing, dapper, and handsome.
I have never been to an opera. I always imagine Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. "I almost pee'd my pants."

  28. I know you are most comfortable dressed as a woman, but I got to say every pic of you dress in masculine attire makes my heart sing. I love you in a tux. And I can't wait to see the Ally version of things. Looking sharp, buddy!

  29. Classy! You really rock that tuxedo.

And ditto on the photographing. I hate when I do myself all up with hair, make-up and costume, hall the camera and tripod outside, take a ton of photos, come back in, dress down and then when I transfer the photographs to my computer discover something was just a little off. Aggravating! But I'm not going through all that prep again. No way!

  31. Ooooooh you look so fabulous here!!! I do love a tux! As a musician, most of my male friends own their own tuxes for the similar reason that they have to use frequently and they're expensive! My fiance has a really nice tux jacket he bought in a second hand shop! And thanks for such a nice comment AND following me! Comments like that mean so much to me!!
