First the bad news: my computer died. It caught a virus and passed away quietly in its sleep. The memorial service was yesterday.
Fortunately I have most of my data backed up, although I did lose a few months of photos. Oh well... that is life in the modern age.
I zipped out last night and picked up a new laptop -- for $300. When did they become so cheap?! I remember when laptops were introduced, they cost $2,500-3,000. Now you grab one for ten percent of that. How can they make powerful computers so inexpensive?
More bad news -- I didn't realize but my new computer runs Windows 8. Don't let the name fool you -- it's not like any earlier Windows program. Everything is different, nothing is the same and there are no instructions. Very, very confusing. Steep learning curve. Again, life in the modern age. We didn't have this problem back when I was young -- you just grabbed a new pencil and sharpened it.
Good news -- I'm going to visit a blogger-friend for the first time. Her identity is a surprise but here's a clue -- I'm travelling to Philadelphia to see her. How many bloggers do you know in Philly? There's a prize for the first person who guesses correctly.
Boo on viruses! They suck in people and they suck in computers! Glad you got a new one though! ;-)

Poor PC :(. World isn't safe anymore for machines :( Luckily he passed away peacefully without suffering.
ReplyDeleteYup, laptops have became really cheap. Over here not as cheap as 300 USD tho.
Have a nice blogger meeting :)

My blog has moved and is now over here : http://rrv12.blogspot.fi/
Hmmm, I haven't a clue as to who you're visiting. Can't wait to see!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer about your computer, but at least the replacement wasn't too expensive! I'm a Mac addict, so when I buy a new laptop I'll be shelling out $1200+.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see who you're visiting!
Macs almost never get viruses, so you won't have to replace your laptop until you choose to. My purchase was forced.
DeleteI am sorry about your computer, but glad you got a replacement for such a good deal! I am a Mac girl, sadly the Macbooks are still rather expensive, so I had to save my money a bit last year to get mine.
ReplyDeleteHmm, Philly? I'm not actually sure - I'm excited to see!
RIP lappy! Are your photos online? Maybe you could download them? Honestly, the best thing to do is keep playing around with it. When in doubt, Google! If you can get to the interwebz?
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with people's computers dying lately? Now I'm worried about my laptop. :( Thanks for the reminder that I need to backup my stuff.
ReplyDeleteBackup! There's nothing worse than losing the fruit of your labor. And it can happen at any moment, without warning.
DeleteYes! Back everything up.
DeleteEveryone's computers are having a breakdown lately! Good that you were mostly backed up, sucks about the photos. I know how gutting that can be. I hate having to learn new systems because everything takes far longer than it ought to, new itunes for example! Have fun on your mystery journey!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the computer. So jealous of the Philly blogger who gets to meet you in person!
ReplyDeleteOh no! Sorry about the computer. Hope you get a hang of the new one soon. I've paid upwards of $700 for DH's laptops, but they're much more powerful than the 300 range ones. I'd rather shell out the money for a desktop. I used my computer mostly at home, and I know I can replace bits of it when it breaks instead of winding up with a very expensive brick.
ReplyDeleteUgh, hate when that happens. Losing stuff is the pits and you just reminded me that I haven't backed up in a while. Learning a new operating system can suck, but it will be a challenge and its good to keep your brain active. Have fun with your new toy :)
ReplyDeleteThat sucks. It is the worst feeling, almost as bad as loosing your phone.
ReplyDeleteNice find on the new one though.
I switched to mac when my last pc crashed. I cursed life for 6 months until I got used to everything. Now will never go back.
Have fun in phily.
Daphne.
Funny you should mention Windows 8 - since my husband is a developer, he remembered he had to decide by today if he was going to upgrade to 8, and just decided to as I read you were finding it a steep learning curve! Hope it isn't so bad for me, since he'll be around to teach me!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your mystery blogger meeting. Can't wait to hear about it.
ReplyDeleteTechnology scares the S#*T out of me! I have my own little laptop which I know will not last too much longer, (and I don't DARE even touch the BF's...my rule) But this is an opportunity to "upgrade" your knowledge and abilities (yeah, I try to look at the "bright" side of things, annoying, I know.)
ReplyDeleteExcited about your blogger meet up! Can't wait for the details!
