Entertainment

Taste in entertainment is subjective but sometimes it's useful to hear from gimlet-eyed friends. They may suggest a show or film you've overlooked, particularly from the past.

Here are my all-time favorite TV shows and movies. What are yours?

Television:

1. "Mad Men"

2. "The Sopranos"

3. "Six Feet Under"

Movies:

1. "Casablanca"

2. "Pee-wee's Big Adventure"

3. "Rocky" (the original)

    1. Sheila, you simply MUST see "Mad Men." It's a workplace drama you will relate to so well. It starts in 1960 but feels like the 1950s: everyone smokes and drinks; men behave badly; all the women are secretaries. The show evolves from then until 1970 with women getting better jobs and more respect. And the fashion -- the fashion!!!

    2. Kudos for finding "Call My Agent." Excellent show; also a workplace drama.

    1. Absolutely! The fashion will bowl you over and the drama is great, too.

  3. I started Mad Men but never finished it. It's definitely a fashion dream show.

    Movies:
    5th Element
The Lord of the Rings trilogy (it counts as one)
    A Knight's Tale

Television is harder because I'm a tv buff, but things I will endlessly rewatch:
    Supernatural
    Psych
    Firefly

I'm currently watching Interview with a Vampire (TV series), Evil (paramount+), and just recently finished Fallout. My guilty pleasures are medical and detective shows. House and ER and CSI are good brain rot shows for me.

    1. Kezzie, try "Mad Men." It's a time-capsule of life in the late-1950s to early-1970s, beautifully written and fascinating. You'll enjoy it.

  7. Nice recommendation for the series. I've watched some episodes of all three of them, but not the whole series. This doesn't mean I didn't like them, I typically never watch more than a few episodes of any series because it's hard to find the time. "Mad Men" is perhaps the one I liked the most out of these ones. The costumes are so amazing! The costume department really did their best. The writing and the actors are fantastic as well. Who ever wrote it really did their research about the time period depicted.
"The Sopranos" is one I watched ages ago and grew tired of after a while. I never saw the ending.
"Six Feet Under" was very funny! I enjoy dark humour, so I liked it a lot. I also think it was ahead of its time by talking about mental illnesses such as depression so openly.

    1. True on all counts. I'm impressed at your sophisticated taste! "Mad Men" was created and written by Matthew Weiner who got his start as a staff writer on "The Sopranos."

  8. I share a couple of your favourites...Mad Men, Six Feet Under and the Sopranos. My top would be Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Enlightened, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos and Seinfeld but I'm sure I'm missing quite a few. I'm really loving Severance and can't wait for it to start again. They leave too long between seasons.

I recently watched Becoming Karl Largerfeld and enjoyed it. It had the lead actor from The Alienist which was also an excellent series.

We're watching The Bear and enjoying that as well.

As far as movies go, Up!, The Graduate, The Shining, Triangle of Sadness, American Beauty, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Parasite but I could easily create a list of 50.

    1. I like your movies. And plan to see "The Bear" as soon as it comes out on DVD. (I have an aversion to paying for any streaming beyond Netflix and Prime.)
