Old Age

When I was a kid, I wondered about a distant, magical year (2000) when the century I was born in would turn over to a new one. It seemed momentous.

I calculated how old I'd be when this event would occur and the answer shocked me -- 43. That sounded so old! Well, 43 came and went. Two decades have passed since and next week I have another big birthday (65). Good grief, as Charlie Brown used to utter.

The bright side is I'm still active: riding motorcycles, hiking mountains, chasing dreams. Darkness appears, though, as some of your parts start to go. Our bodies wear out in our sixties no matter how well we live. Worse, you discover the warranty has expired.

My attitude now is live each day to the fullest. We're not promised tomorrow. Squeeze the opportunity and extract the most juice you can.

  4. I was 32 for most of 2000, and I remember when I was younger thinking I'd practically be dead by then (LOL). 55 is upon me and I'm feeling that same DGAF feeling - we have to live in the moments.

    1. Yup. Wise old folk like us get this; youngsters don't (yet).

  6. Happy early birthday.

I was 10 in 2000. I guess I should have guessed something less ambitious for my future seeing as Y2K was a thing. Then I graduated in a recession? And living through a global pandemic!

What curse - May you live in interesting times.

You're very right. We have to live as best we can. After needing my gallbladder out, I've been pushing new limits and trying new things. No regrets!

    1. I keep forgetting how young you are! Your maturity fools me. Yes, explore and experiment. Without that attitude I'd have never found my passion for motorcycling.

  7. I was just telling my husband the other day "remember when they said cars would be flying by now!" All the years you have been on earth, you have been a blessing to it! I hope you have a very happy birthday!

  8. It's very strange getting older. I look at myself in the mirror looking haggard and think of being 41 and think I should try more! But then I have eco dilemmas.

  9. Living each day to the fullest is what we should all strive for. We'll never be as young as we are today.
