Umbrellas
I love adding whimsy to ordinary life. I actively look for ways to do that. One past success was with umbrellas.
Umbrellas are a functional item that rarely have style. We grab them when it's raining simply to stay dry. Yet why can't we use them as an opportunity to create joy?
A few years ago, I found the coolest umbrella at The Museum of Modern Art (here) I bought it, enjoyed using it, and then bought a dozen more of them which I gave to close friends for Christmas gifts. A picture of this fun object is above.
Have you ever seen a cool umbrella? If so, please describe it to us.

This is a totally cool umbrella. MOMA has tons of fun and functional objects.
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for a fun umbrella, mine is brown and dull. I want one in like a wild plaid or something! I'll have to keep looking!
ReplyDeleteI have a super tacky one that is made of clear plastic, and the other parts (like the handle) is hot pink. Now, if only I could find it...
ReplyDeleteAwesome umbrella. It's like a secret sunny day underneath. I'm obsessed with Edwardian Umbrellas myself.
ReplyDeleteI actually like to see those huge clear ones...
ReplyDeleteI have two, nothing spectacular just a colorful one from TOTES which I carry in my bag and another black one from Victorinox that I leave in the car.
Oh I also have a Hello Kitty one.
I monogram umbrellas all the time in my business
ReplyDeletejust gives them a little extra something

Very cool umbrella. I just ordered an umbrella in hot pink and orange. I usually carry a plain black one so this will be way out of my comfort zone. Wish me luck.

I like the look of pretty umbrellas, but I never use them myself. They tend to turn inside out on me whenever there's a strong breeze. I usually end up just as wet as I would have if I didn't have an umbrella.
ReplyDeleteI could be tempted to use a parasol on sunny, non-windy days. :)
what an excellent umbrella! I can understand why you bought them in quantity. I don't have to use them very often, so mine tend to last for years. Like you, I do look for whimsy. Lately, I've been wearing a telescope around my neck.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cute! I actually own a rather whimsical umbrella myself, it is printed with the Great Wave off Kanagawa print by Hokusai (this one: http://randomknowledge.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/the_great_wave_off_kanagawa.jpg), and I got it at the British Museum. Sad thing is, I got it last spring, a few days later the tsunami in Japan happened, and I spent the greater part of summer feeling guilty whenever I was carrying my umbrella.
ReplyDeleteVery fun umbrella!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE umbrellas! I don't collect much of anything (besides slips) but I do love umbrellas. My favorite is a pink scalloped one with a translucent violet handle and a top that's shaped sort of like a Hershey's Kiss, or like a breast with an erect nipple, depending upon which is more pleasant for you... I was once walking on 33rd and Madison (i.e. the most boring, businesslike part of NYC) with it and a fellow stopped me to say, "That is the cutest umbrella in the gay community," and I loved it because we were nowhere near any "gay community" besides just being human and New Yorkers and whatever...and yes, the umbrella was just that cute.
ReplyDeleteI have a Shabby Chic brand umbrella from Target that I got years ago that never fails to make me smile on a rainy day. It has beautiful pink and blue flowers all over it. I think it's so important to find whimsy in all the little details of life. Keeps you young, keeps you happy.
