One of the largest, most prestigious places for glass art is the Corning Museum of Glass in upstate New York. The Museum was founded in 1951 by the Corning glass company and has an amazing collection. Located in the bucolic Finger Lakes region, Corning has multiple attractions including a hot studio where you can watch glass art be made or participate in the process yourself. I've visited the Museum four times.
The Museum just acquired a work from Anja Isphording, one of the artists in my personal collection. Anja's work explores nature in a way that appeals to me. Pictured here is a piece I acquired two years ago.
For an artist, having your work in a museum is a serious vote of approval.

That's amazing, brava to Anja! That is a GORGEOUS piece, Ally! How do you dust it? :-D
ReplyDeleteCarefully!
DeleteThat’s wonderful news, what an incredible milestone for Anja! Her work sounds absolutely beautiful, and it’s so special that you already have one of her pieces in your own collection. The Corning Museum of Glass sounds amazing too; I love that they not only display such stunning art but also let visitors see the creative process up close. It must feel great to see an artist you admire get that kind of recognition.
ReplyDeleteIt does. And the Corning Museum is one of the best museums in the world. It teaches you about the history of glass, its role in society and its vast potential for art.
DeleteThat piece is stunning, Ally! xxx
ReplyDeleteI agree! And, as I say many times, it (like all glass art) looks much better in person. Photos can't capture what glass does to light.
DeleteThat is so cool, Ally!! You're on the cutting edge of glass art curation!!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying. Actually the credit should go to my glass art guide, gallerist Doug Heller, who steers me in good directions.
DeleteA gorgeous piece! I envy your nearness to such a cool museum. We do sometimes get cool installations in the city but the arts are severely lacking lately. I'm overdue for a trip to the Frist.
ReplyDeleteHave you checked out Trejane on YouTube? I love her glass videos. https://youtube.com/@trejayne?si=eXW3Qqr66lmIsxy-
Thanks for the link. The Corning Museum isn't really close to me (5 hour drive) so visiting it requires an overnight stay.
DeleteI liked Sheila's question. And your answer.
ReplyDeleteGlass art is such an unusual medium. What drew you to it?

Serendipity. Pure chance. I was visiting the Finger Lakes region, looking for something fun to do and art museums generally are always on that list. Visiting CMOG blew my mind! I was amazed at the huge collection of magnificent glass art. I wrote down the names of some artists whose work I admired, then looked them up when I got home. I e-mailed one and she put me in touch with her dealer, Heller Gallery in NYC. There I met Doug Heller who steers me in good directions toward understanding and valuing exceptional glass art. Plus, he invited me to a private dinner with Lino Tagliapietra, the greatest glassblower of our lifetime!
