Kim Petras

Kim Petras is a 30-year old singer from Germany. She's transgender and transitioned when she was 16. Her career is blossoming and she's hitting a number of firsts. Last year she was the first transgender performer to appear in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. This year she won a Grammy for Best Duo/Group and is the first transgender musician to do that. She also performed at the Grammys with Sam Smith ("Unholy").

Have you heard of her? Her music?

  1. I haven't but I'll definitely look her up.

I'll recommend Jesse James Keitel in Big Sky. She is a trans actor who really impressed me in this series that takes place in rural Montana. I haven't seen the Star Trek she's in yet but it's on the list!

  2. I hadn't heard of Kim until the Grammy's but I LOVED her and Sam's entourage and that he pushed her to speak (aw!!).

I can confidently recommend Tami T (electronica/pop) as another transgender artist you might like.

    1. While her music (pop) is not my cup of tea I applaud her success -- which brings valuable visibility to those like me.

  5. She's great, but not the first trans woman to win a Grammy, that honour actually goes to Wendy Carlos who won in 1969,picking up three for Switched on Bach. However, Kim Petras is the first out Trans person to win, as was common at the time Wendy Carlos was very much stealth at the time.

    1. Even more than her music Kim helps by being visible and undeniable feminine. That counters the haters' argument that TG-women are "men in a dress."
