Not Getting Lost

Good gear can mean the difference between fun and misery.

I explored a 6,000-acre park in Manorville today. It has multiple trails that meander and are largely unmarked -- which means it's very easy to get lost.

What saved me was a small but effective compass I picked up at REI for $20. I got it last year after getting hopelessly lost in unknown woods. There's nothing worse than being fatigued, unsure which way to head, and panicky as the sun goes down. I'll never repeat that mistake. Oh, and bring water on hikes, even if you don't think you'll need it. You will.

  1. This is why me and the outdoors do not get along. Those woods look incredibly spooky, Ally! Like "Blair Witch" spooky! :-O

  2. What a clever gadget. With Jos and mine's knack of getting lost, even when the paths are clearly waymarked, this is certainly worth investigating! xxx

    1. It's small enough to carry in your bag/backpack and indispensable when you need it.

  3. The hubby and I have started going on hikes. So far they're marked trails, but I definitely want to get a compass before we explore more.

  4. Maybe when you get to visit Nashville, we can go out to Radnor Lake area. I haven't been back since high school but it's beautiful out there.

  6. Ooh I 'll have to get that! We've been hiking out here (the PNW) and so much is unmarked and I feel like I'm getting lost in time in the overgrown forest. lol

  7. Ah! My boyfriend has that same compass from REI and he loves it! It comes in handy for him on the trails all the time!

  8. I agree about the water- I ALWAYS run out even if I bring more than one big bottle. I remember our trek in the Vikos gorge- it was so hot, I'd drunk my 3 bottles of water and was absolutely parched- we ended up taking water from the river in the end as we were so dehydrated!
I'm terrible at directions...even with a map or compass-my husband is luckily very good with both!

  9. It is important to be prepared when. Things like hiking, water, proper clothing and a compass are all essential. My father would sometimes take me to mountain rescue service exercises a when I was a kid, so all of it got drilled in my head.

  10. I'll be honest... this sounds really exciting! It might just because the UK is still on a weird kind of lock down where everything I want to do is still closed, but exploring a 6,000 acre park sounds like so much FUN! Oh, how I miss adventure!

I've never learnt how to use a compass, although I would like to. I understand the principle of it, but I'm not sure how I could use it to find my way out of somewhere. Such as, if I found myself lost in a forest, no idea of which direction is which, how would I use a compass to get out? (As someone who travels a lot - or used to - I can't help but feel this is something I should really know the answer to!!)

    I hope you're well :)

    1. When you start off on a hike, remember which direction you're heading. Then, later, if you get lost, go back the opposite direction. People get in trouble when they're disoriented and travel further away from where they started.

  11. What a charming little compass! It brings back many a happy memory of orientering when I was in the Girl Guides as a youngster.

I sincerely hope that you never, ever find yourself lost in the woods again, Ally.

  14. Yikes, those photos are straight out of the Blair Witch Project! I can't find my way out of a paper bag so a compass is useless to me - I'm so glad you're able to read one and were able to find your way out!
