The Female Form

Well, you never know what you're gonna find at a thrift-store!

In addition to clothing, I often buy vinyl records and odd items; however, I never expected to see this. My local thrift-store is selling full-sized mannequins. I don't know where they got them, probably a clothing boutique that went out of business. The mannequins are selling for a ridiculously low price of $20.

I bought this one.

Why, you may legitimately ask? Let me try to explain...

There are three reasons. First, I have a Girl Cave and this mannequin will make a beautiful decoration for it. One can't look at this mannequin without thinking of femininity and that's exactly the theme of my private room.

Second, it offers me a chance for some interesting art-photography. Like these photos. I can also put stuff on the mannequin for whimsical photo-shoots in the future.

Third, and this gets personal, a female body-shape is something I've always wanted. For my body. Reality, however, is that I've never had this shape and never will. But seeing it life-sized, in three-dimensions, brings me emotionally closer to my dream. This form is more corporeal than a nebulous image in my mind and that gives me solace. When you can't reach your dream, taking steps closer to it is satisfying, even if they're baby-steps.

Do you understand? What do you think of the pictures?

  2. First can I say hello again after a long time. Second, I love that you have a girl cave (note to self to get a girl cave) and third I'm envious that you have such a great mannequin. And at what a fabulous price. I totally get the idea of having a mannequin and if I'd seen this I would have bought it too. And it looks in fabulous condition. You're going to have hours of fun using it.

  3. Even my wife refers to the basement as my 'girl cave'.
As you know some people give names to inanimate objects. Some folks have names for their musical instruments,(very common among guitar players... just consider BB King and Lucille). Other folks name their cars (HMMMM I wonder who?).
I would suggest you name your new friend. A quick thought may be to call her 'Venus'...I am sure you know why. It is your friend so you have naming rights...unless you want to use your blog for ideas or perhaps even a vote.
    Just idle thoughts.

  4. That was a score! If I lived closer I'd come and get one.

I like to have a mannequin to hold my necklaces and hats. I also like to style outfits on them. Their waists are so wonderfully tiny!

  5. You got such a good deal Ally. I love mannequins. The idea of dressing them up too, although the one I own is used mostly for receiving my jackets and necklaces when I get home. It's a 1880s large size woman which stands tall in the dining room. Running into her at night is quite a horrific experience !

  6. That is a score! What a cool thing - you can build outfits on it and test them out, you can use it as a decorative piece, all kinds of things.

  7. LOVE that you have a Girl Cave (it's what I've been craving lately myself). This bust is beautiful--and what a fantastic steal at only $20. I'm sure there are outfits too you can give a completely different look by dressing up the mannequin.

    1. It started as a place to store my girl-stuff and then just grew into a fun place.

  9. What a Bargain! I Love Old Dress Forms and Mannequins. I have some in all sizes so that if I see something Fabulous I really am Inspired by but the size it all wrong, one of The Girls can Model it instead. You have a Girl Cave... Love it! Dawn... The Bohemian

  10. Awesome thrifting score. The thrift gods were smiling on you! Mannequins are expensive! I've always wanted one, one of the few girlier things I wish I had. They are perfect for dressing up with something you don't get to wear often, but enjoy seeing, like a dressy dress or costume or other piece of clothing that is special to you.
