Long Beach

My first trip of the year was planned for this weekend but a forecast of snow caused me to postpone the journey; I didn't want to be stranded away from home by icy roads. So I pulled out my map yesterday and searched for a nearby place I've never visited before. I went to Long Beach.

Long Beach is a resort community on the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to a vibrant commercial area, the city has a two-mile wooden boardwalk running along the ocean. The boardwalk is pristine having been recently built; the prior one was totally destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Despite being on the Island, Long Beach is brand new to me which makes exploring it fun. Plus, my favorite new restaurant, The Pig & Queen, is in the neighborhood and I stopped there for BBQ.

What did you do today?

  1. I have not been to Long Beach in many years but it is an interesting place. One time in the late 1960's I was almost arrested. My friend and I took his old 1958 big black Buick and his surf board down there in late Feb. or early March to go surfing. He went first and then I went since we only had one wet suit. As I was taking off the wet suit I was apprehended by a local cop who informed me that there was not disrobing on the streets of Long Beach. I advised him that I had a bathing suit and wet tee shirt on as I completed taking off the wet suit. He hung with me for about 10 minutes as I froze standing there but all I got was a warning to stay out of his town.

    1. What a story! Totally believable -- back then, the cops hated young people and hassled them all the time.

    2. Also a few years back I defended a bar on the main strip in Long Beach in a Dram shop case. Out in the street a few guys got to cat calling each other over a girl. One guy who had been in our bar drinking picked up an empty beer bottle that was in the street, broke off the bottom and used it to attack the plaintiff who sue my client's bar. He tuned up his face pretty good and eventually pled guilty to assault and was sent upstate. We defended on the ground that there was no provable evidence of our bartenders serving a visibly drunk patron.

    3. Interesting. I've handled Dram Shop cases, too. The standard is higher than people expect.

  2. Cool lights.

I'm dog-sitting, but I drove home for lunch with the Hubs and Mother-in-Law, plus some kitty cuddle time with Spike. Then I grabbed everything I forgot and managed to get back to the dogs before it started raining heavily again.

    All in all, good day

  3. We've had some crazy weather here in GA this winter (typical). It was really cold and icy a few days ago, but in the 70's the last several days. My wife and I went to our waxing lady today and on the way we were both like "Why didn't we are the motorcycle?" And "If its like this tomorrow, let's go for a ride". Nothing like just getting on the motorcycle and going for a ride - wherever. :)

  4. Beautiful photos! I love the shark. I made it Bondi Beach and just lounged around by the water today. Very lazy, haha. And gosh, now BBQ sounds good for dinner!

  5. Beautiful photos! That's one long boardwalk! Isn't this the famous boardwalk we've seen in many movies?

  7. What fun!

I had to cancel a thirfter meet-up yesterday as I've been in bed sick with the flu. I'm up now because I can't sleep. So much for the idea that the flu shot was going to protect me! This is the second time I've been sick this winter.

  8. Lovely to see this! I've stayed in all day today-didn't get out of bed till 11.30am and after the ablutions, then ate porridge and drank whilst reading. Subsequently been tidying up and now just catching up on a few blogs and then about to reunite about 60 socks with their pairs!x

  9. I went for a 5km walk, had coffee with my older sister and then lunch with my youngest sister, my son and his girlfriend. All in all a lovely day.

  10. Fabulous shots, I love the beach scene, will never ever tire of seeing a body of water and a swath of blue sky. I hope the restaurant was all you hoped for. It is exciting to tour new places.
I was mostly indoors. But I loved to watch snow fall from my window, and slowly see the busy streets get quieter. I took a brisk walk and met friends for champagne, too!

  12. I haven't been there in ages...had a college friend who used to live right on the water and we'd pregame at his place before running in the ocean for the Polar Bear Club. Those were the days!! It's a beautiful area, truly!

I really love the way you just set your sites on a destination and go. Your photos have a moody quality. The gull on the ornamented lamp post is a really nicely composed black and white photo.
