Things I Saw Today

Today is my birthday.  I started it off with a walk around my neighborhood.  Things look different.  The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is palpable.

  1. Ally, happy, happy birthday! I will be sending a belated birthday package soon.

Thank you for sharing pics of your neighborhood. It's hard to fathom so much destruction.

  2. Wow. I continue to be amazed at the destruction. And it is so widespread. The pictures tell a tale for sure. I hope you enjoyed your day in some way. Those aren't the most cheerful pictures, but at least you guys are okay. Big hugs to you on your special day.

  3. Scary and beautiful at the same time. Happy to see life goes on. Wishing everyone the best and hoping the clean-up response is going well.

Have a happy birthday, Ally. I know it's probably hard in the wake of the storm, but life continues on.

  4. Happy Birthday from me.
Mother nature is truely powerful as your photos clearly show.

Take care and enjoy your day.

  5. Happy birthday! I hope despite the destruction evident in the pictures, you did still see a lot of nature's beauty. I love that you show an entirely different side to New York and area that I would have never known about... fast food restaurants and horses in the same walk!

  10. Happy birthday Ally! (sorry a day late!)
So much destruction in those pictures. It's nice to see that life goes on after a terrible catastrophe like that (animals, people celebrating halloween).
    Take care

  15. Stay safe up there. I know what it's like having to deal with the aftermath of a hurricane. Looks like you guys were pretty lucky - the damage isn't too bad.

  19. I hope you got to do something enjoyable for your birthday. My mom is in Farmingdale + has been posting photos of her neighborhood - so many fallen trees. We had more water damage over by us. Glad to see you are safe!

  24. Belated happy birthday Ally, I hope you had a lovely day. Thank you for sharing your photos. The trees make me feel quite sad, ripped out at their roots. Metaphorical, I am guessing, for the people affected by Sandy.

  25. Happy belated Birthday!

I find the mix of the photos of destruction interspersed with photos of the everyday, mundane signs of life a powerful commentary.

  26. It's almost like that grim reaper is taunting, very eerie. I'm glad you're ok but these photos speak volumes about the damage, we sometimes forget the destruction that Mother Nature can bring. Happy Belated Birthday, I hope you got to enjoy some Ally time doing everything you love to do.

  29. Wow! It's so amazing to see your first hand photography in your neighborhood instead of just what's being covered on TV. Thanks for sharing this! I hope you had a great birthday regardless of the turmoil in your town. Sending well wishes for a speedy town recovery.
