I like artistic challenges because they push us to experiment and grow. I'm facing one of my own right now and could use your help.
I was shopping in Wet Seal, a store for young women, and saw something cute. I bought the piece without any idea how to wear it. The item is certainly eye-catching -- it's red and sequined. It looks like a bra but isn't meant to be hidden beneath clothes; it's obviously designed to be seen. Here it is...
Now the question is how to wear it. Most women my age wouldn't have bought this piece, thinking it's too young for them. I refuse to think that way. There are no young clothes, just women who choose to be old ladies.
A girl might wear this is a garish way, exposing skin, but that won't work for me. I want to be classy while using this item as an accent. I'm tossing ideas around in my mind how to wear this and, truth be told, I'm coming up blank. I can't figure out a classy way to incorporate this dramatic piece into an outfit. Can you?
All ideas are welcomed.
Have it peeking out from under a wrap top with sleeves.
ReplyDeleteWear an semi-open blouse over it. Layer a blouse under it, layer a black tank under it. I want to see it with your polka dot skirt and red lipstick!
ReplyDeleteHow about jeans or leggings & a leather jacket- like in the movie Grease. That would look hot with your new car. Oh don't forget black high heels!
ReplyDeleteIf you had a long black pleated skirt and a black shawl. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI'd want to attach it to an ultra-high-waisted skirt such as Melanie re-fashioned here:

to wear with a bolero or shawl, or wear it as a top underneath a suit. Layering it over all kinds of other tops and dresses would be fin to experiment with.
I'd wear it with my waxed black skinny jeans and a black cashmere cardigan, buttoned about halfway up, just covering the bottom of the bra.
ReplyDeleteThat is some top! I picture it under a lacey top, or peeking out of a buttoned-up shirt or cardigan. It could be a fantastic layering piece!
ReplyDeleteI would do a classic menswear-style blazer over it, with a jean/jegging and a pump. Contrast the dressiness with the more casual.
ReplyDeleteLOVE that top! so my thing!! with leather trousers or disco pants

Love this top so much! You are awesome. :-) Thanks for following, I'm following you too.
ReplyDeleteIf I was wearing it, I'd pair it with some really high waited shorts, so that your stomach isn't hanging out, it shows less skin and makes it less extreme. It is summer here in NZ though! Otherwise maybe a high waited pencil skirt? If it was knee length that would be cute and classy.

Ally - I love how you phrase "There are no young clothes, just women who choose to be old ladies." Truer words have never been spoken!
ReplyDeleteLovely black sheer fitted blouse with a smashing skirt or pants. You will need some awesome shoes for this too, no point going halfway.
I think this would look beautiful over the top of a black leotard or body suit with a skirt of some kind on the bottom half. Then you're free to accessorize. Maybe even some long gloves and a silk scarf.
ReplyDeleteOh wow that is gooooooooorgous!! I'd wear it with a high waisted skirt, so it's sexy but not too revealing xx
ReplyDeleteOh and don't forget to enter my 400 followers giveaway if you haven't already :)
ReplyDeleteblack slip dress and a bolero - either black or a jewel colour. But what a brilliant find!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Megan- Layer a button up top over it with just the top two buttons peeking out. It's a gorgeous piece, btw, and I love the red color.
ReplyDeleteIf it were me, I would pick a menswear button up top and tight knee-length black pencil skirt with f-ck me pumps (or boots), and I would be all prim except the part where the top buttons were open to reveal my naughty red sparkly thing (what IS that?). Too specific?
Sounds great, Meghan.
DeleteYes! I was thinking something along these lines as well. Because it is such an attention getting piece, I would pair it with items that are much more conservative so that it doesn't have to compete.
DeleteA pencil skirt & button down blouse with this peeking out. Naughty librarian. :)
What a terrific pop of sparkle and colour - it reminds me (in a completely good way) of Dorothy's iconic red shoes. I'd probably partner this top with either a high waisted pencil skirt (mostly like a black one) or a pair of high waisted, wide legged trousers or classic sailor pants. A fitted blazer or generous sized shawl in the case of the former, and a high school letterman or classic aviator style bomber jacket over top for the latter.

Wow, I'd buy that beauty. too! I'd probably wear it with a skinny fitting, long-sleeved maxi dress underneath it, a change from my usual waistcoats! x
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking something with texture, like fur or leather :)
ReplyDeleteHow about over a black lace t shirt/body shirt?? Or over a white chiffony top--it's just too beautiful to be hidden under anything!!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I had no idea Wet Seal had tops like that, and I shop with teens! It is killah fascinating! You've gotten some great ideas previously. With your gorgeous long legs, I'd layer it over a sheer tank, skinny jeans, high heels, and a moto jacket. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I think you'll have a lot of fun styling the bustier under and on top of shirts.
ReplyDeleteIs it sequined in the back, too? I'm thinking of various burnout/open backed shirt cuts that might look good over it.

very cool top! If I were you I'd par it with highwaisted skirt/pants and/or blazer
ReplyDeleteAlly, I think you have a whole fashion parade to show us here...
ReplyDeletePersonally I imagine wearing the glitter top under a blazer with highwasited pants (to cover the majority of my stomach)... or I'd go more casual and throw on a white see-through top over the glitter bra. Like this picture:

Hmmmm....
ReplyDeleteLayered over a tshirt ? Under a black blazer ? Under or over a strapless dress ?
With black riding pants and jean jacket ?
I guess you can try many ways. Sometimes the one least expected to work does.
