To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before...

I was walking through Marshall's (a discount store) when I spotted this babydoll.  It caught my eye with its colors (my favorites, purple and black) and its sassy attitude.  I touched it, admired it... and then put it back.  "Ally", I said to myself, "there is no place where you can wear this.  You can't wear it in public, you can't wear it on your blog, and spending money on something you only wear at home is self-indulgent.  Put it back!"

I obeyed the voice and moved on.  As I wandered the store, my mind kept returning to the piece.  I really love it.  It not only suits me but also fulfills one of my dreams -- to look sexy.  Movie-star sexy.  Like Julie Newmar (click if you need to).  I long for that feeling and this piece can take me there.

In reflection, that possibility alone is reason to spend $12.  As Aldous Huxley wrote eight decades ago, it's a "Brave New World" when we venture into unknown territory.

Playing with the babydoll last weekend, I liked how it fit and looked.  I then wondered how tolerant you guys would be of my playing with it here.  I'm concerned somebody might object and say there's too much skin, that I'm being indecent, blah, blah, blah... but I love it!

If you don't want to see this beloved negligee, stop here and proceed no further.  If you do want to take a chance on it, imagine you're looking at a dept. store ad; the pictures below don't show any more skin than that.

Do you own anything like this?

  1. You look Fabulous! I LOVE the print and colors! I own a couple of night gowns/slips like this. They are perfect for sleeping in on warm summer nights. This was a good buy! Oh, and thanks so much for your lovely comments on my blog and support (like) of my fb page. It means a lot.

  4. Vavavoom! I think a sassy piece or two should be on the list of "wardrobe staples". I'm glad you decided to take this little number home and give her a whirl, and I really hope it's a shot of confidence because it makes your legs look amazing!

  6. I admire how brave you are. I have a hard time just showing my upper arms. It's all about self esteem and body confidence and you have it!
I use to wear things like these when I was newly married and before kids. I'm guilty to say I've let myself slip into the "comfy" pj mode for the most part. Isn't that terrible? ;( I really should put more effort into my bedtime apparel. I know it does feel good to feel sexy.

  7. Wowza! How fun! I think as successful as your "Fashion without Clothes" post was - of course you can post this on your blog! Go, Ally. I wish I had half of your confidence and bravery.

It sounds like your adventures in lingerie shopping were even more successful than mine! I once went to buy a 'sexy' nightgown to mix up my freebie tees and plaid sleep pants, and had a very rude sales associate embarrass me in the store. Needless to say I left without buying anything and never shopped at the store again. I've since gained the confidence to buy fun, lacy undergarments, but I've stuck to my comfy pajamas. ;)

  8. Oh, Ally, it's awesome and so very "you"! I adore lovely pieces like this, and often wear them under my regular clothes (I also have a bunch of vintage slips).

You're so brave to put yourself out there - I'm too chicken to show myself in a bathing suit!

  9. You look great and I can understand why you feel so sexy in this babydoll :) it's simply amazing. And about buying something only for yourself...why not? If it makes you feel beautiful and comfortable with your body then you should. At least, that's what I do when I can afford to spend some money on clothes.

  10. It's short as all feck, but who cares? Obviously you're not going to wear it out in public. Perfectly acceptable for le blog. And it is kind of Julie Newmar esque, isn't it? Fun!

  13. $12 for something just to make yourself feel sexy? That's a steal! I like Victoria's Secret bras because they make me feel super sexy, but $40 to $50 for something that only I and my significant other ever see is a little ridiculous. I say kudos on this purchase, you look great :)

    1. Something else just occurred to me...I see your internal debate as a classic struggle between the masculine and feminine when it comes to shopping. The masculine side of you is practical and can't justify the purchase. The feminine side of you says "Well, it would make me feel good and that should be enough." Glad to see the feminine side won!

    2. You're right, Emma. And moving in this direction is relatively new for me. I used to squelch all fun urges because of that masculine practicality but, as I indulge more and more, I'm seeing their value. Making myself happy is important. At least, as important as $12. :)

    3. This is such an astute comment; women do tend to see the value in the small indulgences in life, and how great they can make you feel for a relatively small investment. This seems like a big step, Ally -- I'm glad you took the leap. Beyond just how it makes you feel, the decision to indulge yourself for the sake of feeling sexy Is an important aspect of womanhood. And most importantly, you look fabulous!

    4. Thanks, Audi. My emotional and mental journey is as (really, more) important than any other aspect of transitioning. I'm overcoming my apprehension, created by years of being criticized, and embracing that which feels more natural to me. As I do, my conviction that I *am* a woman grows more solid in every step. Thank you for your support. It means mountains to me!

  14. I think it looks fabulous - I can actually picture you going back and forth on this :)
I also think that 12.00 USD is nothing compared to the fulfillment this gave you, which is actually the most important.
How did you feel in it?

  15. $12 is not very much to pay for happy OR sexy! I own a couple of things...but nothing this sexy...and you look waaaay better than I ever would in it.
You know what they say about wearing sexy underthings under your everday or work clothing? Even though no one else can see it, YOU know you've got it on and can feel special, fabulous and sexy wearing it.
I'm glad you decided to treat yourself. Meeeeoooowwww!

  16. Who says you can't wear it every time you blog? Cool colors, very daring. And if someone doesn't like it, they can click right away...

  17. Ooooh la-la, Ally! I think Terri should host a LINGERIE party instead of pajamas, but maybe not, 'cause none of us would be nearly as hot-looking as you are. I know I'm so short that I look sort of like a girl hobbit in anything baby doll style :P

Judging by the comments, I think everybody LOVES it! You GO, Girl!

  18. Can't say anything more then what has already been said - very sexy, lovely colours, makes you look great and the fact that it makes YOU happy, makes it an absolute winner...(USD12 x 8 (South African Rand/USD Exchange rate) = ZAR 96 - even when converted into our currency - it is still a win...
