Did you see the Olympic Opening Ceremonies? What'd ya think?
They were quirky but engaging. Odd but interesting. Designed by Danny Boyle, the London filmmaker who did "Slumdog Millionaire."
My favorite parts were Rowan Atkinson ("Black Adder") comically playing an organ and the Queen herself jumping out of a helicopter. :)
Are you an Olympics fan?
The athlete I'm rooting for this Olympics is Holley Mangold, a funny and confident 22-year old woman who weighs 340 lbs. and can lift heavier weights than any man you know. She was profiled in Rolling Stone magazine. Here she is...
I LOVE the Olympics. I could spend my whole day in front of the TV screen, watching them. But, you know, responsibilities...
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch the Opening Ceremonies. I don't know. Don't really care about them. Is that bad? I'm more into the actual events.
Normally I agree with you, Ashley. I'm not into empty pageantry and usually skip them. Five minutes of Beijing's ceremony was too much for me.
DeleteI was, however, curious about what Danny would do. His ceremony touched on history (the shift from an agrarian society to industrialization), comedy (the aforementioned Rowan sketch), serious drama (Kenneth Branagh, for goodness sake) and culture (Sir Paul McCartney). Plus, England is reeling economically so we all want to see them rally for a good time. Morale is important when a society is struggling.
I didn't see them, but everything I've heard about them makes them sound like they were a site to see!
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch. I'm not much of a sports person or ceremony watcher. I have been enjoying the .gifs made up of the Queen looking bored. I imagine it'd be worth watching for that, but the internet often synthesizes long things I can't keep up with.
ReplyDeleteI am also rooting for Holley Mangold! I did read up on her recently and watch some interviews with her. Have you heard about her uniform issues? Or rather all the uniform drama that's gone on?
Addedum - just saw the Voldemort/Mary Poppins stuff, I take everything back lol this is hilarious.
DeleteI am not a person who follows sports. Any sports... i know it's bad and if i could change it i would... it's just not interesting to me - however i look up to athletes. For me discipline is just admirable.
ReplyDeleteI loved the opening ceremony even more than I thought I would. I'm a huge fan of Danny Boyle and was delighted that he focussed on the Industrial Revolution, something close to the hearts of us Midland and Northern-based Brits. x
ReplyDeleteDannnggggg, she's a beast. I have been rooting for her since I first learned about her. I always appreciate a female weightlifter.

Your synopsis of the ceremony pretty much nailed it. I couldn't put it in better words if I tried.
ReplyDeleteShe looks so interesting. Will have to check her out if the networks decide to air her.
We are a huge fan of the olympics and now trying to get the kids interested and inspired as well.
