We Be Giants

I'm big for a girl.  Six foot tall, 200 lbs.  Size-13 shoe.

Being this big makes it hard to get dressed.  Clothes sized for a normal woman don't really fit me.  The proportions are wrong and the length is too short.  Out of necessity, I make do, but it's almost an accident when something fits me as well as this dress.

You've probably thought the dresses and skirts I wear are too short.  They really aren't; they are normal-length clothes and just look short on me.  That's because I'm a giant.

I mention this because, in the Wide World of Fashion Blogging, I'm not alone.  There is at least one other person out there who's big like me.  Her name is Gracey and she blogs at Fashion For Giants.

I found Gracey's blog a year ago and follow it to see how she accommodates this situation.  She chooses smartly and wears things well.  I admire Gracey's fashion sense.  She's also a nice person, living in Oregon where everyone seems extra-pleasant.

This week, unexpectedly, Gracey offered me a J. Crew pencil-skirt which she decided doesn't suit her.  When I ripped open her package, I was thrilled to discover the skirt fits me like a glove.  Perfect size.  Thank you, Gracey!

Do you guys have any difficulties with size?  Too big, too small, too bosomy, too flat?  Too hippy?  Too boyish?

  1. The skirt is an amazing fit and looks incredible on you. Gracey is clean out her closet--here's hoping more can come your way. and this is so generous of her.

  2. I love it when you wear bright colors! They look so good on you, which is not true of many people. I remember seeing that skirt on Gracey's blog and think it is so wonderful that she passed it along to you. There are a lot of fashion bloggers now, but the ones I follow all seem to follow each other and it feels like a really warm, kind little community. Like we could all sit down for coffee and yak about clothes for hours...

  3. I'm 5'10 and 170 pounds with a size 10/11 shoe. Since my weight gain, it's been hard to find flattering jeans, as my thighs are HUGE. I'm currently using this site (joyofclothes.com) to get some idea of what'll fit my pear-shaped body.

  4. THIS LOOKS AWESOME! For realz. Love the yellow with it. I am not a giant so I have no idea about these problems you speak of. Capri pants hit at my ankles.

  5. Ooh! The skirt is fabulous. I agree with Louise, you look fantastic in bright colors. Gracey sent you blogger gold. I'm glad it fits. I stop by her blog every so often. I enjoy her style even though she faces quite different fashion challenges than my petite self.

My biggest problem is needing to take in almost everything. I've got broad shoulders and fuller hips, and I'm technically "petite". So many things are too long or cut wrong for my proportions. Alterations are my best friend.

  6. YOU LUCKY GAL! I love magical blogger swap-gifting-share packages :) I think both you and Gracey are so lovely and lucky to be tall. Love how you wore those long necklaces together. Pretty pretty pretty!

I'd love to find out what "too bosomy" feels like. Alas, it's too boyish. Broad shoulders and narrow hips. Girl clothes are shaped like girls, and I'm not. But Dear Hubby sez I have super-girly feet :P *big sigh o' relief*

  7. What a friend! You look so lovely in this gifted goody ( and I feel like you should be lounging at a country club poolside table with an iced tea). This look is so chic.

  8. I adore Gracey, in fact I gave her the Blogger Appreciation award recently. You look wonderful in her skirt!! I'm tall (5'9") and range from 140 pounds to about 150, all on top. A classic apple, if you will. I've always wished I had a waistline.

You look great. You have fabulous legs for these kinds of skirts!!

  9. This is a great fit for you! I love the colors and it fits you perfectly! How awesome of Gracey to share!

I am definitely not tall. I'm not quite petite either, so that can be challenging sometimes. I'm on the edge.

  10. I love your new pencil skirt! What a sweet thing to do. It looks great with the yellow blouse.

I'm short (5'4") so I have to watch my proportions or I'm stumpified.

  11. I fell in love with Gracey as soon as I came across her blog the first time. She is SO tall, and I am SO short. It seems like a match made in Heaven.

  12. Whoa, look at you! I really love this outfit. That skirt print is awesome. I have troubles with clothes ALL THE TIME. Being 4'11" + curvy doesn't help. I have a normal torso, just super short legs, so petite clothes don't cut it. I hate going to the tailor, so I usually just fold my pants up + stick them into boots. I know, I'm being lazy, but I can't be bothered, especially since the last time I went to a tailor, they screwed up my $120 pair of jeans!

  13. What a great skirt and such a nice gift from her. I love the combination you put together.
I now know my size and body pretty well. I know if it is low rise I wear very small, cause I have no hips, but if it is high waist I go up like 2 -3 sizes cause I don't have a thin waist.

  14. That is a great fit. How sweet of her to send it to you. I definitely have fit problems. Pants have always been way too short which made me pretty dorky growing up in school. Plus I'm so flat chested many things don't look good or filled out very well. I can never wear anything tight or very revealing. If I were to buy a two piece bathing suit it would be a size 14 on the bottom and a size 8 on top. That should say a lot. LOL

  15. i'm six foot too! that skirt is amazing :)

  16. I feel your pain! While I'm not a size 13, I still have big feet for a woman (most brands, I wear a 9.5 or 10...when I squeeze into a 9, it's a miracle). Plus, although I'm very slender, I have crazy-wide shoulders for my frame, so blazers and Oxford shirts NEVER fit right unless I get them tailored and nipped in on the sides. Not to mention my long spaghetti arms and legs present a problem for most pants/long-sleeve shirts... haha

  17. First off, I just read your last post & giggled very loudly. Thank youi for that!

What an awesome skirt and it's true, it does fit you well! I love it with the soft yellow top :)

I have issues with bottoms. Part of the reason you see me in a lot of flowy skirts, or dresses. I have a smaller waist, but a big boooty & legs. I am a pear for sure.

  18. I LOVE it! It's so perfect on you, Ally! And thank you so much for your kinds words. I'm just happy my skirt found a good home. Can't wait to see how else you style this.

Also? Yellow is sooooo your color!!!

  19. Love the print of the skirt and the colors look fabulous on you. I have all sorts of fit issues - I'm short w/a big butt and thighs, large calves, large chest and sort-of wide shoulders. Oy, I'm a mess!

  20. How nice, i love your new skirt.
I have a problem with trousers being too long. Also since my arms are short, most long sleeves have to be shortened too.
It's not easy but, i work my way around it.

  21. I'm short and slim (5' 1" and a size 6 or possibly 8 depending on where I'm shopping) but I am definitely busomy so I need tailored or stretchy fits to avoid looking dumpy. Teenage ranges which could be my salvation are too young for middle aged me. For example I have good legs but I just can't carry off a mini any more and cutesy embellisments just shout mutton dressed as lamb.

  22. Ally, this outfit looks phenomenal on you ... perfection. Ladylike ... I absolutely love it ... this must be the best outfit I've ever seen on you!!

I have hips ... so skirts and trousers are usually about a size to two sizes too big in my waist if they fit my hip. Its frustrating ... but I've learnt to live with it :-)
