Elizabeth Taylor just passed away. She was 79.
Liz Taylor was the first big movie-star. Not only was she a noted actress, she was a celebrity whose wild personal life was irrresistable to millions. She was loved and hated by many. Liz was married eight times to seven men -- which means she married Richard Burton twice. (Who does that?) Taylor paved the way for our society's current obsession with celebrities.
In fact, Liz's biggest splash was a scandal she caused in 1959 -- she stole the husband of a women then-viewed as "America's Sweetheart," Debbie Reynolds. Liz started an affair with Eddie Fisher while he was married to Debbie and broke up their marriage.
Professionally, Taylor won two Oscars (for "BUtterfield 8" and "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" She set a record for highest-paid actress in 1960 when she filmed "Cleopatra" (released in 1963) for which she was paid a million dollars.
She did charity work for AIDS and was a friend of Michael Jackson.
Do you have any reflections on her life?
I still cannot believe she passed. She has always been an icon to me growing up as my mother was a huge fan, particularly of her style.
ReplyDeleteI might have an Elizabeth Taylor movie marathon this weekend.
I was so sad when I heard it. She was so beautifull. I love her movies and will always love them and her.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe she's dead. I didn't want to believe it when I first read it. She was amazing and such an inspiration to all of us. She will truly be missed, by her loved ones and her fans.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy watching her movies- esp A Place in the Sun and Suddenly Last Summer both with Montgomery Clift- I was pleased to find read in one of his biographies that the two of them were friends off screen as well
ReplyDeleteI'd say I'm too young to know much about her, but that's no excuse. Yet, I don't know much about her at all. I don't think I share her same approach towards love, but I can respect the charity work she did and for breaking Hollywood norms.
ReplyDeleteI always thought she was so glamourous and remember watching her movies with my mom when I was really young... she was beautiful, very striking!! and so va va voom!!! not many of those good ol REAL hollywood stars left anymore!!

Such an amazing beauty, truly classy! When I was in my early twenties I dyed my hair dark and wore it short, and heard the best compliment of my entire life when I was told I resembled a young Elizabeth Taylor!! I never heard it before or since, but I was beaming!!
ReplyDeleteLovely post. She's always been an inspiration to me.
ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly sad. I remember watching her movies with my Mom.
ReplyDeleteShe was a very stunning, talented and passionate lady. To answer your question, a piscean can do that! She was one. I'm too, so I always thought I had a special connection with E.Taylor and shared her view of doing whatever you do in life with your whole heart. I still think she's in my top-10 of icons! I was very sad when I heard she passed away...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely post dear (I'd do one too, is I wasn't upset today... And thanx for your support)
did you know that she hated to be called Liz....

She was so beautiful. Only 79, that's still kind of yound =s
ReplyDeleteit was sad, i was so interested to read her life summary in the newspaper too, she was so beautiful that indeed she married 7x...i guess she was hated bec those people are jealous of her and envies her as well.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Carrie Fisher's "Wishful Drinking" show? It has a really funny treatement of the whole "Debbie-Eddie-Liz" fiasco.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet tribute! I always thought she was beautiful, my mother did too. My mom died her hair black to look like her in high school :)
ReplyDeleteTruly an iconic beauty! She was just such an elegant woman, especially in her later years. ~Serene
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that she has passed away but like you said, she'll be a part of movie history with all that she has done.
ReplyDeletePersonally I don't know much about her. Maybe it's my age. All I knew was that she had a lot of diamonds, always glamorous, friends with MJ and joked about her marriages. I would be interested in learning more.
She was a fashion and beauty icon who lived life to the fullest- RIP Liz.
ReplyDeleteL-doll: Yes, I did! In person on Broadway.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a movie with her it it that I recall. Just as long as I remember she's just always been famous for being famous. My biggest exposure to her was probably the White Diamonds commercials. I think it's funny how the world is reeling at the passing of a woman who was quite old and in ill health. Did people think she'd live forever?
ReplyDeleteI wish nothing but peace for those who miss their friend.
She was such a huge personality. My grandmother idolized her - just as I thought my grandmother was a style icon...so I guess some of my own style I owe to Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteI have a soft spot for "National Velvet." I love horses.
She was amazing. Some of her movies like A Place in the Sun and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are my favorites. She was such an icon and true movie star.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading her biography, I can conclude a few things about her and while they sound contradictory, they all go together:
ReplyDelete1. All fur coat and no knickers, she wasn't the classiest of ladies. You wouldn't have caught Grace Kelly burping and swearing in public the way Taylor constantly did.
2. She was a tad greedy and even slightly childish, she loved her jewellery like her own children and could never have enough. Her demands for gifts were insatiable.
3. Had a big heart, she knew she had to stick up for people and put herself out there for the people she supported. She was a good friend to many people.
In short, quite a diva but then she must be known as something. She was definitely not one of my favourite actors but the woman was fascinating and you can't deny her beauty either.
